Journal FidelCatsro's Journal: Ways to improve slashdots user experiance 6

Ok just a few ideas I have which would make this site more enjoyable for everyone..

Story moderation... available to everyone(1 point per story) .. you can mod a story informative insightful etc. .. which is logical as you can filter by author and topic etc. but you should be able to have the opportunity to judge it .After all everyone has bad days and the best editors sometimes screw up and the bad ones often have some gems you may miss.

Removal of over-rated and under-rated , replace over-rated with ill informed and make it M2'able .
Make a new moderation called Witty which is for posts that are both funny and informative etc. and garners karma

change M2 so it is more instant .. Give a random set of people who are able to M'2 10 points per day to meta-mod on things as they read stories .. balance this with keeping the original M2 system . Also make editors accountable so they too can be M2'd

Make comments editable for up to 2 minutes after posting.. as we all sometimes make large slip ups we don't notice

give Users infinite mod points for their own JE's , now this could be used to abuse the karma system so i suggest we make it detached form the karma system , however outside moderation of JE's should still garner karma .Although perhaps that can be counter by the JEO's (journal entry owner .,.. sounds rather important eh) moderation(only back to a zero state for the comment IE. no negative or positive , just to stop mod trolls attacking JEs) .

A choice between flash ads and text based ads . Honestly i will block all flash ads and annoying Gifs and would rather I didn't have to .

just some things there , I'm sure I have more but my memory is failing me today

  • I think this whole karma thing is way overrated. Think about it, who really gives a fuck? It's just one big pissing contest.

    • It's all about respect of your peers .
You see it may very well be a big "look at my penis extension" thing but it has another side.
if you have low karma then people are more likely to ignore you and pass you off as a troll , where as high karma is a sign of a consistently good reputation.
negative Karma is there to root out the trolls and make sure they can be avoided as much as possible .
so perhaps your right we should remove the positive karma aspect and just stick with a negative one.

      but right now people
      • Some of them are good, but can you even begin to imagine the trolling possibilities if you can edit your posts for several minutes after you post them?

An alternative might be to make it possible to add to, rather than edit, the content of a post. Sort of like an "Update: yadda yadda yadda".

Now that would probably work, rather than have to back through a thread and explain to 20 posters what you meant.

Mind you, even that has troll potential. p.Ah, the smell of karma burning ...

  • I like your ideas about changing some aspects of modding. I M2 twice a day and I see a lot of comments come through which are either modded with an agenda, or a funny comment is downgraded because so many of the new slashdot crowd don't know the references that the rest of us do. Being able to mod JE's is a good idea, but I think in practice it will lead to more abuses than benefits. I also don't think that being able to edit posts after submitting is really necessary since there is that Preview button t
    • well allowing every person one vote on a story should balance out the troll aspect.. but perhaps your right-
The JE modding needs some work.. but if it was karma less then it would be OK .. though it is a recipe for :( why didn't you mod me up talk
