Submission + - Microsoft Demos C++ AMP at AMD Developers Summit (hothardware.com)

MojoKid writes: "The second day of the AMD Fusion Developer Summit began with a keynote from Microsoft's Herb Sutter, Principal Architect, Native Languages and resident C++ guru. The gist of Herb's talk centered around heterogeneous computing and the changes coming with future versions of Visual Studio and C++. One of the main highlights of the talk was a demo of a C++ AMP application that seamlessly took advantage of all of the compute resources within a few of the various demo systems, from workstations to netbooks. The physics demo seamlessly switched from using CPU, integrated GPU, and discrete GPU resources, showcasing the performance capabilities of each. As additional bodies are added, workload increases with a ramp-up to over 600 of GFLops in compute performance."

Google Serves a Cease-and-Desist On Android Modder 336

Several readers sent in word that Google has served a Cease and Desist order to Cyanogen, one of the most prolific Android modders: his CyanogenMod is enjoyed by 30,000 users. The move is puzzling. Gizmodo wonders what Google's game is, and Lauren Weinstein calls the move "not of the high 'Googley' caliber" that one would expect of the company.

Cops To Start CrimeTube To Report Offenses 238

An anonymous reader writes "UK citizens may soon be able to report crimes by uploading videos taken from their mobile phones. Ian Readhead, director of information for the Association of Chief Police Officers, told silicon.com that forces want to build a video reporting portal to allow the public to upload potential evidence. Checking YouTube is now a routine part of many police investigations, he said, and police want to build on the extra functionality that this gives them."

Actually this is not the first time eve will be distributed in boxes. When they launched in 2003 Eve was distributed by Simon & Schuster Interactive. After a few months CCP purchased back the rights for distribution from them, since they found out that the digital downloads from their own site greatly outnumbered the physical copies sold and thought that they can manage much better on they own( Quite correct I may say they are alive and growing 6 years after that)

and only purchasing DRM-free games.

Unfortunately, those are few and far between. I can accept games like Supreme Commander, which are initially copy-protected, but which have the protection removed by the game developers themselves afterward (as the DRM is usually demanded by the publisher, not the developers).

You should try Sins of a Solar Empire. Stardock promised to release the game without any copy protection and they kept their promise. Actually, it turned out to become one of my alltime favourite games. I remember reading a great article about it in ars exactly when the whole **it with spore and amazon just happend :) http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/09/05/solar-empire-moves-500-000-units
