Your company is the exception rather than the rule in my experience, and of course your company is in the right, I have to confess I was pretty disgusted at some of the MoD's security.
Qinetiq and Atlas' employees have no compunction at all in using their phones in restricted areas, let alone military personel. It's pretty much a joke in the places i've worked.
