As several people here have pointed out, Iran is not disconnected from the Internet. Users in Iran have been able to connect to the internet without any atypical problem... this rumor has been swirling about for a few days. I manage a Persian-language website with many readers in Iran, so I have both the motivation and the resources to check into this... we've seen no decrease in traffic from within Iran. I've also been able to find no source for this that doesn't trace back to the Internet Traffic Report, which as other has pointed out has a somewhat inexact methodology. This is the second time this has been mentioned in Slashdot, and everytime it is posted, it gives me a heart-attack... there might be a need to post a correction or at the very least to stop asserting that Iran has no connectivity without better confirmation.

Submission + - Yahoo! sued for giving user info to Chinese Gov (bbc.co.uk)

Eviliza writes: "The US Human Rights organization The World Organization for Human Rights has filed suit against Yahoo! on behalf of two Chinese writers who were jailed and possible abused after Yahoo! turned over their personal user information to the Chinese Government. Shi Tao was arrested in 2005 for "divulging state secrets" and Wang Xiaoning was arrested in 2002 for posting pro-democracy material online. Both were sentenced to ten years in prison. Yahoo! has admitted turning over information to the Chinese government, but claims a weak connection between divulging user information to the Chinese government and the imprisonment of their users. Furthermore, they say that they are obligated to follow Chinese law while operating in China. Yahoo! has asked that the suit be dismissed."
