> Meanwhile Huawei announced that it is increasing R&D spending

This might be a false comparison. Huawei and Amazon are very different companies. It would be difficult to directly compare them, and to suggest that the strategy that works for one would work for the other is at best naive. For example, it's worth noting Huawei is effectively a state owned enterprise of the PRC, and their business is subsidised by the state. It's also worth noting that the PRC tightly controls the public statements, censors everything, and many times statements are aimed at the domestic audience. Meaning that the CCP wants the Chines people to not be exposed to bad news, everything is just great with the PRC! Reuters acknowledged that in that link you shared, that they could not independently verify any of the statements made. So it's a bit weird you chose to cite a source with super questionable content. Also it's worth noting that in the USA several other big corporations are cutting jobs, and those might be a more credible direct comparison.

> This is so stupid. In a few years Amazon will be trying to hire these people back, having lost ground to companies that looked beyond the next quarter.

You might think it's stupid, that's your opinion, but I would suggest you might be fallaciously appealing to ignorance. That said, it was really amusing in an extremely ironic way, because you say "companies that looked beyond the next quarter", and I would argue that Amazon is probably doing exactly that. Consider that Amazon already cut 19K jobs, and is preparing to cut another 9K. Do you really think that is a company with a short term vision? They clearly believe the economy is going to get worse before it gets better, and if anything they now believe the economy is going to get much worse than they originally forecast.

Big corporations have teams of economists on the parole, they are not living in the same kind of denial that you might be. (no offence)

I've been using linux on an HP Dragonfly Elite and the touch screen support from Gnome is pretty impressive. I don't think I'd want to go back to a non-touchscreen environment so have been keeping an eye out for one. So far, I haven't found one. The HP Dev One looked great but again, they neglected to include it.

Submission + - AROS One x86 v1.7 and MorphOS 3.17 PPC Released

Mike Bouma writes: Version 1.7 of AROS One for x86 has just been released and it's a distro of the "AROS Research Operating System", originally "Amiga Research Operating System". It's a standalone, free and open-source multi-media centric operating system that's designed to be portable, flexible, efficient and lightweight and can be seen dual booting with Windows 10 on an Acer laptop here. The most popular AROS specific community portal is AROS Exec.

Parts of AROS were used to create the commercial PowerPC based Amiga-Like operating system MorphOS, which has recently seen a new release as well, version 3.17. The most popular MorphOS specific community portal is MorphZone.

The latest version is actually from earlier this month.

Submission + - "Turn an Old PC Into a High-End Amiga with AmiKit" 2

Mike Bouma writes: AmiKit is a compilation of pre-installed and pre-configured Amiga programs running emulated on Windows, macOS, Linux as well as running on classic 68k Amigas expanded with a Vampire upgrade card. Besides original Workbench, AmiKit provides Directory Opus Magellan and Scalos as desktop replacements and its "Rabbit Hole" feature allows you to launch Windows, Mac or Linux applications directly from your Amiga desktop! Antialiased fonts, FullHD 32-bit screen modes and DualPNG Icons support is included and this package comes with exclusive versions of MCP and MUI 5 (Magic User Interface).

The original AmigaOS (version 3.x) and Kickstart ROM (version 3.1) are required, also the recently released AmigaOS 3.2 is supported. You can also get the needed files from the Amiga Forever package(s). It even supports emulating AmigaOS 4.x (for PowerPC) easily through Flower Pot.

Yes, ID Software once claimed in an interview Doom couldn't be done on the Amiga. It got ported in days on Amigas older than PCs are able to run Doom after the source code got released. On most unexpanded PCs Doom ran also pretty terrible.

Quake was even ported to 68k/AGA. With PowerPC and RTG upgrade cards Quake runs well on classic Amigas. The first versions of AmigaOS4 were also being developed using the Amiga 4000 expanded with PPC upgrade cards!

"Dear customers,
It was the year 2007 when we introduced our first “baby”, the Sam440ep. Fifteen years ago. We designed and produced the Sam440ep, a lovely mini-itx motherboard that many enjoyed running AmigaOS 4, AROS and Linux.

At that time we, a bunch of mad amigans, resolved to do our best to bring this hardware to life for all the Amiga Community because it was in dire need of a new computer platform to run AmigaOS.

Without the Sam440ep, the future of AmigaOS would have been very difficult.

After all these years, just as the latest batch of Sam460LE is being produced, we choose to release the electrical schematics of the Sam440ep to the community.

We hope many of you will be happy to see one of the first image of our first project.
