Comment Should have closed years ago (Score 1) 240

Purchased an external HD before, brought it home to discover it was dead on arrival, returned within 30min of purchase and was told that the serial number didn’t match the box and was refused the return. I tried escalating to the store manager explaining that I had barely been in possession of it, was basically accused of trying to swap it (which someone else apparently succeeded with), and was told to deal with the manufacturer... This would NEVER happen with Amazon, and is why I will never step foot in another Fry’s... They were notorious for selling used / returned HDs as new, many of my friends reported getting HDs with personal files & operating systems on them.. They did not purchase ‘open box’ and we quickly learned to start looking for official plastic foils with “Maxar” or “Wester Digital” printed on them. May they Rest In Peace next to Sears, Block Buster, and Radio Shack... your time is over.

Comment Geothermal = Expensive but amazing (Score 2) 152

Geothermal is a great 24/7 solution; however it doesnâ(TM)t get as much recognition because it is very expensive with a long break-even point for investments (>20-30 years). Geothermal power plants are usually supplied steam from numerous geothermal production wells; insulated tubing supplies the steam to the central power plant to spin turbines which then goes through a cooling towers to recondense to fluid which is then re-injected to the earth to prevent the supply from depleting in what is called an âinjection wellâ(TM). Each well can cost millions due to the high rig cost for the larger drilling rigs that can dig sufficiently deep, and generally geothermal wells are tricky beasts to drill... you need specialized (and expensive) drilling fluid & cementing solutions that can perform and withstand the heat. Eventually these wells fall in disrepair which then require work-over (smaller) drilling rigs to periodically service which can include patched cement jobs, additional casing (liners) to replace rotted casing, etc. H2s + Carbonic acid love to eat Cement, so incredibly expensive cement additives such as latex and non-calcium based cements will often be used in highly acidic formations which can cost a million dollars for a single cementing stage (generally intermediate casing cement jobs). Long story short, Geothermal = $$$ It is a misconception that Geothermal is only regionalized... Binary cycle geothermal plants can be built in areas where accessible temperatures are not sufficient to flash water to steam. These plants use a lower boiling point fluid in a closed system that is heated by water from the earthm which then flashes the fluid to steam, which powers the turbines and is recondensed. https://www.eia.gov/energyexpl... There is also concern (and some correlation) between Geothermal & earthquakes. While Geothermal does not âcauseâ(TM) earth quakes, it may trigger potential quakes early, and generally isnâ(TM)t popular with the neighboring communities. I didnâ(TM)t give this much credence until I heard from an Engineer over at Calpine that they have seen such correlations. Regrettably, much of the Geothermal power in Northern California has been ravaged by fires, which puts an even larger hurt the on economic feasibility when tragedy strikes. However I think Geothermal will inevitably be the future of Oil & Gas assuming we come to our senses before it is too late. If oil becomes antiquated or outlawed, Geothermal will likely be the next boom to subsidize our increasing energy demands.
