Journal Ethelred Unraed's Journal: Homesickness^2 15

This is perhaps the first time I have had serious homesickness really really really badly in a long time.

The reasons? Allow me to list them.

  1. Joe Gibbs.
  2. Versus Bill Parcells.
  3. Monday night.
  4. Dallas Friggin' Cowgirls.
  5. In Washington for a "skinning".
  6. No satellite TV.
  7. Game starts at 3 a.m. German time anyway.

/me goes and kicks a Kraut's ass

On the other hand...I'm a-gonna be in Virginia in late October (mostly in the Norfolk-Williamsburg area, with a couple of days in the DC area as well) and Ohio around the end of October (plans aren't yet totally solid). Anybody wanna meet up? Then pop off an e-mail to me...

  • Hell - there are a ton of us here - you may as well just make it official and we'll see who shows up (depending on the night, I'm pretty much in - I haven't met any of the /. crowd yet).
  • if it can all get coordinated.
  • Ethelred - what dates specifically and where do you expect to be staying in the area?

    • It's still a little up in the air -- send me an e-mail at john < at > grantham < dot > com.

The only dates that are completely certain are that we're arriving on 20 October, and leaving on 4 November, but only with a couple of days on each end of the trip in the DC area (the rest in the Tidewater and in Ohio). The first couple of days we're probably going to be meeting friends, so that leaves the tail end of the trip -- the 2nd or the 3rd of November.

I know, it sucks the wad -- beginning of t

      • Saturday and Sunday (23rd, 24th) are awful for me. Working a double shift on the range. 25th->30th are a-okay.
        • I lost track -- are you in Ohio these days or in Maryland? 'Cos roughly 29 Oct to 1 Nov I'm in Ohio, give or take a day on each end.

Probably 2nd or 3rd November we'll be in DC again, and we're flying out on the 4th.

          Cheers,

          Ethelred

          • Maryland. You'll know if I permanently go to Ohio, as there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth.

2nd and 3rd Nov are ok also.
            • We are already planning on having the local Plastic.com meetup somewhere that night to follow the results as they come in and either celebrate or drown our sorrow in fermented libations.

As a MeetUp.com coordinator for Plastic.com meetups, I now have a lot leeway in scheduling events - so I have set up an event [meetup.com] on the meetup site with a journal entry here [slashdot.org] to host discussion of the location.

Since I already had to plan the Plastic meetup I don't mind taking a major role in planning this as a joint event - if
              • Good God, how could I forget that the 2nd is Election Day...it totally slipped my mind. (Hey, I got used to absentee balloting and catching the results in the morning. ;-) )

At any rate, my request on the meeting place is that it be a seafood restaurant (and for God's sake not Red Lobster or some other abomination^Wchain). I intend to pig out on honest-to-God seafood while I'm in the States...damn, do I miss it.

                Cheers,

                Ethelred

                • hmmm,

Seafood restaurants don't lend themselves to the criteria I listed, but maybe it could start as dinner at one location then move to a more bar-like location - ideally within a block or two so no transportation is required between the venues?

The serious dinner ppl might not start drinking at 8, but should be able to get there at 9 when the polls close and they call the entire Eastern Seaboard and Ohio River Valley for Kerry!

  • Can't wait for tonight's game, on TiVo (hah). If I could I'd send you a vid of it .. but don't know how with just a PowerBook G4 and standard analog out from the TiVo.
    • Bethanie (bless her) has volunteered to tape it for me. Though if you do figure out a way to rip it to MPEG or something, I'd be much obliged...

And here's hoping Gibbs and the crew mow down the heathen Cowgirls. I wanna see 'em get pounded into the dirt by them latter-day Hogs. (OK, they don't hold a candle to the original Hogs, not yet anyway...)

Hail to the Redskins, hail victory...

      Cheers,

      Ethelred

  • The British broadcaster five is showing all MNF games live. Once the World Series is over they'll be showing all SNF games live too. That's two free live NFL games a week.
    • In theory we could get British satellite TV -- if we had a satellite dish. (I'd love to, in fact. BBC Prime is something I've lusted after for years.) Unfortunately, there are three problems with that:
      1. No clear view to the south from our flat.
      2. Other tenants not willing to share cost of having dish installed on roof and run cables through the house.
      3. No money to pay for our own dish or subscription anyway.

We could get digital TV via cable, but the only provider currently available to us doesn't do much i

      • That is a bitch. The ultimate PVR would have P2P built in so if you want to watch shows that overlap just get the show off the other boxes. If its a black box with a remote most people would leave it on all the time and support the network without much thought on leeching. The intergretion would be soo good. Just hit record on the guide and if it couldn't schedule it then it would mention that it will get it from the "different channels" and will not be ready until sometime after the recording.

        Tivo be damn
