Ethelred Unraed's Journal: Spam subject lines

The latest (and unfortunately all too effective) tactic of spammers is to have their e-mails contain Subject lines with random words. This does, however, make for some...arresting...subjects.

Just had one called "still growing dodge duress".

I didn't know Dodge made an SUV called the "Duress". Though I suppose it would be somehow appropriate. Especially if it has to be grown.

I also initially mis-typed "spam" in the subject of this JE and typed "spasm" instead. Also somehow appropriate.

Heh heh... Dodge Duress... they could just rename the Ram. That piece of mechanical dog dump spend 90 percent of it's time in duress...

One arrived a few minutes ago with the subject "Squish pall" which somehow seems to tie into your discussion.

I still like the ones that say "Message Subject."

I had a weird spam today.

It was adressed to [e-mail]. I just don't understand how it could be deliverd: there is no user alikberov on willekens.lu.

To be 100% sure, I even emailed that user on willekens.lu and I got a bounce. Very weird. How the fuck did they do that?

Easy. They BCCed your real address. Because the To: line is to an address on your domain, your spam filter ignored it.

Of course! I'm dumb... How could I forget about BCC. Perhaps because I don't use it often ;-)

They don't even need to do that. If they talk directly to your mail server, they can set one RCPT TO address in the SMTP envelope, and a different To: address in the message header. The recipient mail server generally doesn't look at the message headers.

I just got one that read "i love you." I don't think she (for the mail came from someone called Jennifer something) actually meant it, though, as she had CC-d the same email to seven other people.
