Yep. My friend owned a 1979 Midget. I rode with him 3 times. The car broke down and we walked home all 3 times. The last time it was actually more comfortable to walk in 20 degree weather than to ride because in the car I thought my shoes might melt from the heat in the footwell and I thought I might get frostbite on my face from the air leaks in the cabin.

Microsoft and Red Hat Team Up On Virtualization 168

mjasay writes "For years Microsoft has insisted that open-source vendors acknowledge its patent portfolio as a precursor to interoperability discussions. Today, Microsoft shed that charade and announced an interoperability alliance with Red Hat for virtualization. The nuts-and-bolts of the agreement are somewhat pedantic, providing for Red Hat to validate Windows Server guests to be supported on Red Hat Enterprise virtualization technologies, and other technical support details. But the real crux of the agreement is what isn't there: patents. Red Hat has long held that open standards and open APIs are the key to interoperability, even as Microsoft insisted patents play a critical role in working together, and got Novell to buy in. Today, Red Hat's vision seems to have won out with an interoperability deal heavy on technical integration and light on lawyers."

Compared to the 5 versions of Windows 7, how many distributions and versions of Linux are there to choose from? Look at Ubuntu/EduBunto/Gobunto/Xubunto as an example. If it's so obvious that multiple versions of Windows 7 are going to confuse the masses and doom it to failure then what does that say about Linux?

I tried two monitors, but I hated when stuff centered itself in the 'middle' of the screen, so I went with three and could never go back. I actually had 3 17" CRTs for a while, but now I use 3 standard 19" LCDs at 1280x1024. On my older system I had a dual-head AGP card and a PCI VGA card. My current system is a Dell Precision T3400 with dual video cards, each card is capable of driving 2 DVI monitors, although I have no intention of having a forth. I do most of my work on the center screen, the left hand screen usually has my email client, web based documentation, pdfs, etc. and the right screen is where I have RDP connections to servers I'm working with. Of course now that I have everything as I like, macular degeneration is threatinging to screw it all up for me...

Changing a School's Tech Disposal Policy? 218

An anonymous reader writes "I attend a state university where a new building has recently been put in, and a new budget put in place. They have decided to upgrade all the computer systems involved in the department, with a few slight exceptions. From my limited understanding, State policy is that we cannot just let things go, they have to be sent back to the state capital in order to take them off the books. Then they put them in the dumpster. I feel that this is a huge waste of useful machines (some are merely two years old), but I know not how to change this. Any suggestions, or does anyone know where Illinois dumps used tech?"

Early Review Calls New Indiana Jones Film Dreadful 643

bowman9991 writes "Hope this one isn't true! An early negative review calls the upcoming "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" movie predictable, lacking in tension, and a fan's worst nightmare. SFFMedia believes this new Indiana Jones movie could create a similar reaction a lot of people experienced after watching the first of the last three Star Wars movies, 'The Phantom Menace': you wait for years and years, the anticipation building, and then it's so awful it taints your view of the original movies. Of course George Lucas was involved with Star Wars too." The SFFMedia piece refers to this review on Ain't it Cool News. The trailer I saw (before Iron Man) actually looked great to me, so I'm taking this with a grain of salt.
