I think the removal of Linux support is just a byproduct of the introduction of anticheat software. They never officially supported Linux and you had to run it with wine. The anticheat just happens to break when you try to run it with wine so you can no longer play the game on Linux. Since Linux users are such a tiny fraction of their player base, they have no interest in finding an anticheat implementation that actually works with Linux. Instead they just drop all pretenses of pretending to support Linux.
