Journal Em Emalb's Journal: Stuff you probably don't want to hear.... 21

On my mark, unleash hell!

1) Pot will never be legalized. Stoners are too damned stupid to figure out how to beat the system. Oh sure, they can carve a bong out a fucking piece of soap, but politics? Please. The main problem I see is you got wake-n-bake dumbasses being the champions for your cause. the Black Crows? Woody (yeah, that guy from Cheers) Harrelson? The hippy down the street with the tie-dye shirt who wishes he was still in the 60s? Yeah. Why is it also that most stoners are fucking stupid? Not stupid as in just generally not intelligent, but stupid as in has trouble putting underwear on before pants? Seriously. I had a buddy that was borderline retarded when he toked. He toked all the time. He finally quit, cause he said he "needed to get his life together". Why? Was pot keeping him from doing something meaningful with his life? Why is it that I also saw him about 3 years after his pot smoking days were over, and he could form complete sentences without throwing in a dude or right on? Anyone?

2) Ya'll see this shit on the EU wanting to limit free speech on the internet? Do they not learn from history? Do they not know the US (if this ever came to a vote) would slap that down for it's own citizens as fast as it could? We'll put up with annoyances, but damned if they can limit what I want to say. Guilt knows no bounds. Man, I can't wait for the current generation to pass on so we can get some younger blood in charge. As the same time, Good Lord, the younger generations are gonna be taking over soon! heh.

3) Free Software: It's a great idea. Hey everyone, work hard for your software, but uh, give it away. That's awesome if you can afford to do so, but not everyone is tenured, or has a building at Harvard, ya know? How does Em support software? Well, for starters, he buys software. No, not MS, that came bundled with my PC, and at work they have licenses for that stuff. I'm talking about things like TrillianPro. Or even Slashdot. Yeah. I for one put my money where my mouth is. If all software were free, how would we make money to live? Support? Are you fucking kidding me? The support industry is on life support. Try again.

4) I'll finish up with a question and a poll:

My European friends (and I'll lump Arb and the others from Australia in here as well), how do you feel about the EU? Do you like the Euro?

A) Yes
B) No
C) Other

Since it's gonna happen anyway, feel free to answer as well, Americans. Although, I'd like for you to have actually been to Europe before quantifying your answer...mainly cause I think it helps. Of course, this is all the opinion of one guy. And I've been wrong once. Back in 79. I thought I was wrong then, but I was wrong for thinking I was wrong. So one time. 79.

Thoughts? I'm gonna leave this JE up for a few days, cause I really want to know what people think about this stuff. Thanks for your input.

  • for every Carl Sagan toking away, you need, like, 80,000 dumb-ass dead heads to counter balance the weight by acting as ballast.

Intelligence is a zero sum game!

Or rather, it should be. I'd certainly like to take it a away from a few peeps.
  • If this case [sfgate.com] turns out to prevent the feds from getting involved, states will be able to decriminalize or legalize pot. It just won't be allowed to cross state lines. Californian's want the terminally ill to have access to pot. A majority want pot available as medicine if a doctor prescribes it. In another ten years a majority could realize its no worse than getting drunk and legalize it. Some in the legislature would point out the prison system would be significantly less burdened. The police and cou
  • 1) Pot. I personally have nothing against people using drugs. I never intend to use them because I like my brain, but maybe that is just me. Yeah, people can get dumber than a post using the stuff, but if it is regulated like alcohol and tobacco then go for it.

I got an education on just how bad any drug can be growing up. My parents used weed and were brought down by the law when I was in high school. It was intended to kill pain for my step-dad's back injury, but they just gave the excess away to their
  • I could technically respond, but the only part of Europe I've been to isn't doing the Euro anyway.
  • ...for what little it's worth:

    1) Never say never. It wasn't that long ago that any talk of legalizing it was taboo in America; that taboo has been broken for a long time, and even mainstream politicians take the idea seriously.

    2) The /. article is being (surprise, surprise) alarmist. Yes, some member states of the EU ban hate speech more stringently than in America (notably France and Germany), but not all do, not even most. And hate speech is also banned under some circumstances in America as well. It'

    • Have you considered a career in politics if the despot and/or High Potentate things don't work out?

I believe you failed, Guvnah, to ansuh the question concernin' the EU, and whether you personally liked it or nawt.

      Please advice.

BTW, the fox drank the Clamato. I say again, the fox drank the Clamato. ;)
      • Have you considered a career in politics if the despot and/or High Potentate things don't work out?

What makes you think the despot thing won't work out? Are you doubting me? GUARDS!

Oh, uh, I actually did think of going into politics once in a while (I was campaign manager in a couple of mock elections in school, was a delegate at the Mock UN, that sort of thing), but running for office is pretty much right out. (Can you imagine a former ex-pat running for office in post-9-11 America? "HE'S UNPATRIOTICK

  • 1) It'll happen when some states and/or the feds grow the nads to tax the bajeezus out of it. Just like anything else these days if it becomes profitable it'll happen. I think what's holding them back is that they're afraid of looking like hypocrites and getting voted out of office because of it.

    Gubmint: Pot's bad!
    Citizens: Gotcha. Bad.
Gubmint: Wait. Pot's not that bad after all so you can have it. But you're gonna pay for it little human. Oh how you'll pay.
Citizens: But I thought you said...
    Gubmint: SILEN
  • 1) Pot: Legalize it, regulate it and tax the shit out of it. I don't use it personally, but people self medicate with alchohol, so why not let others use pot the same way?

    2) Everyone is entitled to my opinion. However, I take exception to those people who insist that "their opinion" is the only right opinion.

    3) Since Talinom is my house mate, I rarely pay for software. Mostly my computer programs don't get upgraded until he's already beta tested them to death. I don't do games, so I don't buy them

  • Stoners are too damned stupid to figure out how to beat the system.

Dude, um like, stoners aren't the only people who, um.. hey, I didn't realize my hand looks so cool. Um, stoners aren't the only ones who want to legalize weed, man. Ha ha! Right on!

There's a principle at stake. Do you own yourself, or not? I don't smoke pot and I'm not interested in it, but I find it insulting that someone else thinks they have the right to demand that I abstain from it, and it's humiliating that they'll actually us

    • The closest I've seen is that sometimes they want some sort of escrow access to the source, in case we go out of biz or something.
D'oh, that's a lie. The closest I've actually seen, is that sometimes they want ownership of the source, as part of the deal. So the client can even resell it, if they want to.

Boy, can I agree with that on one hand and disagree with that on the other hand. We do need people in power who understand technology and its impact, the needs of a service oriented and global economy, and the importance of accepting those whose choices you disagree with. However, I see way too many of the "younger ge
