Journal Em Emalb's Journal: What I'm watching 37

(these are the days the shows come on....I usually Tivo stuff and watch it later.

Monday night:
CSI:Miami

Tuesday Night:
Playmakers
Queer Eye for the Slob

Wednesday:
The OC--love this show. Dunno why. I think the lead male character reminds me a lot of myself growing up. Always one step away from completely screwing up.

Thursday:
CSI
Without a Trace
Friends**

Friday:
Hack
LA Dragnet

**I abhor Friends. Glad it's their last season. Weird how far they have fallen in my eyes. Jen is still loyal though.

What I'm watching

  • WTF is wrong with you, man? Scrubs is the best show on TV!! (Thursday night on Fox, I believe).
  • Monday Night Football

    The occasional other football game.

    DVDs - owned and rented.

That's pretty much it. Every once in a while, it's turn on the TV and try to find something that's not too stupid. Maybe Britcoms on Saturday nights, if the TV gets powered up. My wife watches a lot of Court TV (the Serial Killer Channel) and the Discovery Channel (she likes the house modding shows, but not the car ones), so that's what I watch when I'm in the same room.
  • How can you have a list like this and not have 24 and Junkyard Wars (which, granted, has gone downhill) in it?

Other shows you MUST watch are MXC (Most Extreme Elimination Challenge) on Spike [this shows how much litigation has ruined the US game show business], and Good Eats (you can get sensitivity points and still be geeky).
  • About the only things I find myself watching these days is on PBS:

    This Old House
    Victory Garden
    Nova
    Antiques Roadshow
Various cooking shows my local PBS station shows on Sat. afternoons

I still catch Queer Guy every now and then.

I never miss an episode of Nova. It's the one show I think makes my brain bigger. I really liked the last two weeks on string theory.

It puzzles me how this show is so popular. I watched it three or four times and it was very formulaic -- it was the same story unfolding at the same time each episode, with different characters and method of murder. Also, and this is just a pet peeve of mine, the ridiculous technology bugs the heck out of me (doing a 10X zoom on a grainy surveillance photo to reveal the crystal-clear fine print on the back of a receipt hanging out of a woman's purse).

I second the Scrubs notion as well. Also check out Survivor next time a season starts (no point in jumping in now).

    • I'm *right* there with you about CSI -- and what's worse is that the dialogue is ridiculously stilted, and the acting just sucks.

I find Law & Order, in spite of the strict formula it follows, to be more entertaining, because the acting is just better. Then again, I have noticed a distinct preference for shows that are cast by Walken & Jaffe (I can almost tell when they've cast a show without looking at the credits -- and I don't watch much TV at all!).

As for my shows, it's Survivor and Trading Sp
      • What I love about tv is L&O is exactly as you described CSI above for me.

        Man, opinions are cool
      • You should be watching Coupling on BBC America. If you don't have BBC-A, get a fucking DirecTV system and start watching. Now! Don't make me spank you.
        • Time & day said program airs?

I get BBCA, and I've certainly heard of the show -- but I can be pretty slow to catch on to new (to me) shows & stuff.

So maybe a spanking *is* in order -- you know -- just to get me motivated.

      • I'm in the U.S. and I still download it instead -- there are just too many ads dancing across the screen when it airs.
    • It puzzles me how this show is so popular.

Two words, my friend: Jorja Fox ;-)
  • There's just not much that interests me anymore. I've been watching the 1st 3 seasons of Farscape on DVD. I didn't watch it at all during its original run so I'm just waiting for the rest of the episodes to be released.

If I do watch TV during prime time it's usually hockey. I can get Devils (preferred), Flyers, Rangers and Islanders where I am, so there is almost always a game on.

I can't get enough of American Chopper. Yeah yeah... they argue a lot... if that's all you see... well too bad. Monster Garage... love it... Jessie's the man... even if he is arrogant and not perfect.

CSI, now I love this show. I think this season is really looking amazing... I love the fact that the producers aren't affraid of unhappy endings... and the formula is a bit dif

    • I was also the first person of any I know who watched Friends. I think my brother gave it up before I did (culminating with the marriage of Chandler and Monica. That was my last episode). I've spoken with a few other folks who watched it from some point in season one, and all have given up on it. Perhaps because we've grown up, whereas the Friends haven't?

Could Rachel *be* any more of a slut?
    • The best way to watch Friends is by downloading the episodes and using a media player that uses the arrow keys to jump forward and back by five or ten seconds. Every time a story arc is unwatchable, don't watch it, skip it. This way there are no commercials either.

      Scrubs OTOH is always watchable.
  • I have Good Eats, Iron Chef, and Most Extreme Elimination Challenge programmed in on the DVR. Other than sports, I don't watch much else.

I'm trying to figure out how it started (maybe with all the fuss everyone was making about Spirited Away) but I've gotten hooked on watching anime, which I never have been interested in before. I'm currently watching Love Hina. I mentioned once [slashdot.org] about getting the Steel Angel Kurumi theme caught in my head, and Lady Guardian said that there was much worse. I think I have fo

    • I saw that for the first time last week. Strange, but funny and well-handled. I like the way they present God.
      • The coming attractions for next week look interesting. Has Joan really been talking to God, or has it been Satan? It looks as though 'God' has asked her to do something akin to what he asked of Abraham. (Well, not on that level, but certainly of the 'would God ask me to do *this*?' ilk.)
    • @ least 'll respect you for honesty. I guess can't comment too much because I used to watch Gilmore Girls. Fortunately, the station changed the time slot, making it easier stop watching.

I don't watch CSI anymoe because they seemed so presumptuous, & rude. I am actually offended by Grissom's attitude.

I usually watch what everybody else is watching, & try not to watch too much tv. It's not working well, because I'm trying to pry myself away from the Internet, only to get addicted to tv. They usually
      • I figure everyone has their guilty pleasure. I'm reminded of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry had to admit to watching Melrose Place:) The only interesting thing is that my guilty pleasure has gone from the tawdry Melrose Place to the rather saccharine Joan of Arcadia. Must be growing up or something.

To tell the truth, I think it's that tawdry is boring. When you see how much bed hopping, philandering, and general whoring around goes on in real life, how can you be shocked at the antics of Melrose Place? (
        • I decided to watch it last night, & I am surprised @ how good it is. I also watched Monk. I'm surprised that I forgot about that show, when I made my previous comment.

I think that 1 thing that both shows had in common is a little bit of depth. You would see real people dealing with real situations. Okay, Monk is a bit unreal, but this last episode had him & Sherona showing a new side.

Maybe my standards are being lowered despite my best intentions, in that I might be willing to tollerate rude chara
      • 20/20, Nova & Connections are good.

I'd like to make a correction: I meant Daily Planet [with Jay Ingram & Natasha Stillwell], not Connections. I like that show because they seem to bring it down to the level of interest for the average Joe. I don't like a lot of stuff they talk about [ie: astronomy], & their word choices, but they do say a lot of cool stuff. Watching that show is like browsing /.'s front page for news. Another good point is that the hosts seem genuinely interested in the questio

  • Really, I only have to watch *one* show a week, and that's Smallville, on the WB - I'm actually getting sort of burnt out on it, because the show writers seem to be dragging their feet, but my wife is really dedicated to it, so I watch it too.

I've taken to watching Jeopardy more often, and we catch Simpsons, That's 70's Show, Friends, Sienfield, Nature, and Nova about once a week (usually the syndicated ones... I have a nack for missing shows in their first run).

Oh, and my wife watches the new Joe Million
  • ...bear in mind that I'm in the Land'O'Krauts:

M-F early evenings: Simpsons (dubbed into German, surprisingly well)

Occasionally some documentary on XXP (German documentary channel) or BBC World

Fridays: Enterprise (yep, dubbed into German, quite well in fact)

Saturday and Sunday afternoons: ST:DS9 and ST:V (*sigh* dubbed into German, and not very well)

Weekends: BBC documentaries and shows like "Horizon", "Panorama", "Top Gear", "Correspondents"

Other than that, I don't watch much else, unless a good
