The time I realized most clearly that I was a geek was senior year of high school, having lunch at the mall with a couple of friends, talking about where we were planning on going to college. One guy said he was considering University of New Mexico (or somewhere out west) and that they had a great archeology department and I replied, "Well that's exciting, you can watch Carbo-14 decay." And all 4 of us at the table laughed out loud.
There we were, in the middle of the mall laughing about Carbo
If I was a geek [m-w.com] would I know about cool websites like this [geek.com], this [joereiss.net], or this? [penny-arcade.com]. Hah. Anyhow, I don't do circus acts, so I must be geek-free. To prove my non-geekiness, here is my geek code.
I resent being considered a geek. "Geek" is a derogatory name, an insult. Yes, my profession will be in computers and I use one all day, but I am not a geek. Computers are simply my hobby, much like how your hobby is [sports/art/music/drinking].
I don't understand why slashdotters love calling themselves geeks so much. Maybe it's my age, but the term has such a negative connotation.
Not only that, but I'm an old geek. Not old enough to have worked on anything more archaic than a 386, but archaic enough that I remember taking a trip in Kindergarten (I think it was kindergarten, may have been day care) to the University of South Carolina and watching them run punch cards through the computers that were as big as the room.

So what you're saying is that you're not very old
at all then:-) The 386 was still many years away
when I started. In fact, the original IBM PC hadn't
even been released...
I was alive then, but my first computer experience was on a C64. Then an Apple II, then a IIe. I remember the IBM's with the dual 5 1/4 floppies; we used those in high school, in my "word processing" class, then in my "database" class. I'm terrible with model numbers.
I just remember us all fighting over the machines that had hard drives. Sigh.
I guess I didn't remember the 'early days' before I was actually working... I'm older than I thought!
