    • Damnit. And here I was, hoping my poll choice of alot of games, and the other poll choice of some other game only I care about would have suited everyone.

Damn. I thought I could please all the people all the time. Stupid Em. :D

      Neener neener neener....
      • But how could you have missed Asteroids??!! You're never going to satisfy everybody, but you at least have to cover the "Required" responses in your polls.

I mean, who ever heard of a poll about early Arcade video games that didn't include "Asteroids" as one of the answers?
        ;-)

Truth be told, I hated ateroids. It just was boring in my humble lil opinion.

          That's why I didn't include it.

And, I'd like to think that someday I will be able to please everyone. :D
    • Oh, my gorf. IT TALKED!
  • Ageism in any form is an ugly thing. Oh wait, does this mean that my answer should be G? ^_~
    • ACK! Quit makin me feel old :-(

      How old are you?
BTW - my answer is E.)
      • ACK! Quit makin me feel old :-(

Sorry. My age gets picked on a lot on the circles of people I hang out with, so I retaliate with agesism and they tend to shut up real quick ^_^ ... well, that or they just start talking about pop culture references I have no hope of getting. I was born in '82.

        • My gosh, born in 82? I was out earning a paycheck when you were still filling your diapers.

Oh, wait, no I wasn't. I was busy in the 2nd grade making fun of the kid who ate his boogers.
          • "Oh, wait, no I wasn't. I was busy in the 2nd grade making fun of the kid who ate his boogers."

Yeah, and it really hurt my feelings. It's not my fault my mother never fed me.
    • F for me too. Woot! Go 1980s! Or something like that.
  • I pick H: Pengo. Those little guys were so cute, although it was difficult to find a machine anywhere.

The music was hard to get out of your head as well.

  • And I still suck at it.

Just because I like the way "ass pirate" sounds (and I wasn't born in the '70's).

I didn't really go to the arcade until later, around the time Street Fighter 2 came out. I can still remember the smell- the closest machine was at the photo developing place a few blocks away. Mmmm... chemicals. I must have spent at least $100 in quarters on that game.
  • ...and Galaxian.
    Something about those 'G' games.
    Oh, and Tron.
  • Pong, tennis, squash, table football, and a few others that slip my mind. Kept my sister and myself amused during our youth. Forget the make, too. Damned grey cells!
  • F. At least prior to the comma. :)
  • Here's a question, I'm hoping someone knows the answer to. In the mid-80's there was a game (Probably around the same time Rush'n'Attack came out) that was like River City Ransom but Arcade style (the graphics didn't suck that bad.)

You walked through, had a subway level... ate food, grabbed pipes and hit people with them. I can't remember the name of that game but used to play it constantly at the local pizza parlor.
    • Double Dragon?

I don't remember the food part though, but I do remember being able to elbow my way to the last level where you had to fight some guy with a machine gun.

No, although I think it came out at the same time the NES did.
    • Was it Final Fight? That game ruled. Looks like it came out in '87, maybe a bit too late to be the one you're thinking of.

        Woo! That's it. Thank you!
  • Of the poll choices, it would be Galaga. But the game that I really spent a lot of time on, was Joust. Joust ruled!

Fun fact about Galaga: it had some sort of weird bug or easter egg cheat (not sure how to classify it) where you could make it so the enemy stopped shooting at you. In one of the early levels, you "played with your food" for a long time by not killing some of the guys, and eventually they would just give up shooting.

When I read about it somewhere, I didn't believe it, but the one day a f

  • Galaxian was my favorite. I was a little older so I played them at the student union.

  • F; but I liked to play BlockOut (3D Tetris) when
I was small; asides from that, I learned MS-DOS
and GW-BASIC. I was 8 at that time, and started
learning my first word English when I was 12...

  • Pacman, yes, but also anything I could find, but you forgot Space Invaders, the game that made Taito a household word! Or not.

Because we lived in the boonies, I only got to play the classics a few times. Star Wars was the game that I always wanted to play. I really didn't go to arcades much until I got my license. That was about the same time as TMNT, Bad Dudes, Xmen, Superman, and the first wave of fighting games.

Games I'd really like to add to the home arcade: Gauntlet and Gauntlet Legends.

  • I was born in the 1970's, and here are the games I played:

Pole Position (this really wasn't fun after a while)
Choplifter(I used to like shooting the damn scientists/civilians that u were supposed to pick up)
Wonderboy(Yeah I'm not gay, but hey I was good at this game... nothing better killing things with lil' stone hammers while on a skateboard)
    Halley's Comet (Space Shooter)
Galaga (I used to always sacrifice my first ship so I could capture it and then have a double shooting thing)

    • my love for centipede's "roller controller" has stayed with me. my pointing device of choice is a kensington turboball trackball. the expert mouse trackball is a close second. throws me off my FPS game to have to use a normal mouse.
  • ...because none of A-D were high on my list. Maybe Defender. The games I remember most vividly are:

    • Tempest: Abstract design, incredibly high twitch factor.
    • Gauntlet: Greatest co-op game of all time. Playing co-op online doesn't have the same sense of satisfaction you'd get from smacking someone upside the head when "Elf shot the food!" :-)
    • Q*Bert: If you have to ask...
    • Qix: The game that launched a thousand screensavers. :-)
    • Altered Beast: Broke new ground in utterly bizzare bosses.
    • Dragon Breed: This one
  • Galaga and Centipede. The two greatest games EVER!

I don't want to date myself, but I remember when my local Sears first got Asteroids. I was so sad the day I went to Sears with my parents and Asteroids was gone. :( But, then I found Space Invaders right around the corner. :)

Everyday, on my way home from school, I would play Centipede (my parents even rented one for my 12th Birthday Party). Then my local liquer store got Galaga. Wow.

Man, if you had high score on either game you were the neighborhood

depends on the era. i was really lucky as a kid. for a few years my father worked for a distributor that just happened to distribute arcade machines. we always had a couple of the the newest games in my garage, sometimes before the official release. got to play all i wanted for free. of course, this started an addiction that has lasted even to this day. in the long run it hasn't been so cheap. there's a reason that your first one from the pusher is always free.
    • "depends on the era" means that what game i played depends on the era. i played a lot of gorf, pacman, ms pacman, defender, stargate, armor attack etc when my dad was in the business. later i played gauntlet, mortal kombat, star wars trilogy, and house of the dead 2 (just to name a few).
  • SPACE INVADERS!

I can still remember driving to Melbourne (about 2.5 hours from where we lived at the time) with my dad to go to see "Star Trek" and stopping off at a pinball parlour where we saw Space Invaders for the first time. I was instantly hooked!

Other arcade games I played: Defender, Asteroids, Galaxian/Galaga, Dig Dug, and a bunch of others I can't remember now... Must dig out Mame and relive some memories... ;-)
