  • I just bought a new Dell 4550.

    P4 2.53GHz
    256MB of ram*
    60GB hd
    DVD player
    Geforce 4 128MB video card
    Free CDRW 40x10x40

No monitor, no software packages (other than the crappy XP Home edition--which will be wiped completely off and have W2k installed)

    total price=$700.00

Nifty. My old computer, a P3 550 with 128MB of ram is just too damed old now (wow, already obsolete. 3 years ago it was the bomb) to bother with. It doesn't do what I want it to do and would be too much of a hassle to piecemeal upgrade it.

The dell deal was better than what I was getting from MomnPops and about $500 better than those crack smokers at Gateway.

No wonder that company is going under.

*Dell wanted $110.00 to upgrade it to 512MB. I said no way, since my local Compusa has 256MB simms for $50.00.
    • I found that in general, you can usually kick Dell's price in the shorts by doing the Pricewatch [pricewatch.com]/Fatwallet [fatwallet.com] dance.

Sometimes, though, Dell runs a "special" stripped down box (no good for gaming, tho) for 3-5 hundred bones.

      • Yep, you're right.

But, after I stripped all the unneccessary crap off the box and got just what I wanted, the price was better than anywhere else I looked.

Plus, I get the dell warranty, which is nice.

It was fun telling the dell dude all the stuff I didn't want.

Word Perfect? No thanks, I'll run my office premium in stead. McCaffee? Nah, I have Norton Corporate edition from work for that.

Well, we also offer McCaffee's firewall program.

Uh, last I checked, black ice was still free and did a bang up job.

I tried like crazy to get him to ship it sans OS, but he wouldn't. I guess they must have signed a new agreement with MS.

Oh well. XP home won't be on long--I'm guessing roughly 45 minutes, or long enough for me to verify everything works properly and stuff.
  • Apple PB Titanium G4 15".
    60GB HD, 1GB RAM, 1GHz G4, CD-R/RW drive.

    Beeyootiful machine.
  • My last complete computer purchase was in January 2001. The company I worked for gave us $1000/year to keep our home computers up to date. I got an Athlon 800, 256MB ram, 2x30GB IBM Desktars striped with IDE RAID-0, GeForce2 GTS. I've since upgraded the DVD-ROM (old one died) and brought the memory up to 512MB, but that's been it for computer hardware for me. The kids are still on a P2-266 with a TNT card.

Right now I have more fun playing with my Dell Axim Pocket PC anyway. Especially with the wireless gear that'll be showing up on my doorstep this afternoon.

  • I last upgraded my PC nearly a year ago--and the core system was the same from a year before that.

I'm firmly in the "my next computer will be a mac" crowd, btw. I might add some good ram and a new processor to my current box, but beyond that I'm not doing any major upgrades until I can swap out of for a mac.

(Of course, the likely purchase will be an iBook to replace my used Pentium Omnibook with the broken hinges.)
  • Bought one for a friend, he was supposed to make monthly payments, never did. I repo'd it, and now have a fairly new Vaio. I have upgraded it in the last 2 months with a new video card.

Now, I hope you washed this poll after it came out of your wazzoo.
  • I got a GeForce4 last week.

Before then, it was about 3 or so years.
  • I bought another 512 MB of ram for my Athlon 1900+, bumping me up to 1GB. I have no need for that much ram, but I always wanted a Gig of ram. and now I have it. wee.
  • Apple Dual 1.25Gz G4, just purchased within the last month.
  • I upgraded my existing or purchased a new computer...

    in the last 2 months.

Bought a third HD, 2 new fans, a new CDR drive, new wireless mouse and keyboard, and 2 256K memory sticks.
  • June of '99. I still have my overclocked Celeron 366.

I did add an additional 40 GB Drive and Geforce 2 GTS about 18 months ago. but alas...my computer is starting to seriously suck wind.

For $700 that Dell sounds good...maybe I can get a coporate discount too...

The wife will probably veto it anyway...damn credit cards...

  • I'm waiting for my new processor to comlpete my new system. It's an Athlon XP 1700+. Not the top end, but it doesn't cost much, and it will be quite nice compared to the PIII 750 (long dead) it will replace.
  • I love that Cookie Monster song.

    C - I bought an iMac last summer. 17" w/ superdrive. I'm actually turning into a "switcher".

I haven't booted my w2k/linux box in the last 4 months. It hadn't been updated with anything in over a year.

I purchased/half built a new computer last fall that was an Athlon 2400 XP-- some of you may remember my story [slashdot.org]. Amazingly, the company [alvio.com] is still in business! I guess I'm not too disappointed (after all they have good prices) but I am suprised.

My new system has been running great.. no complaints here. The only thing that has been a little screwy is the fans when I first boot up- one of them makes an awful sound for some reason.

  • Of course I was forced to due to still unknown issues. Athlon XP 2100+ with .5GB of 1700 DDR on a Soyo Dragon Lite. I kept everything else (Radeon 7500, Soundblaster Live, 3com card, 120 GB HD).
  • Um, if you count attempting to upgrade my PC, as soon as last week, I was upgrading it -- but PC100 memory is not to be found. Otherwise, the last upgrade my PC got was its CD-R which was put in two Christmases ago.

I *did* inherit two SGI boxes from work, though. An Indigo2 (an Indigo Indigo2, at that) and an Octane. They've been re-christened Shampoo and Lum, from Ranma and Urusei Yatsura respectively.
    • Shampoo was one of my favourite characters in the anime :) What else do you like/watch ? I'm a huge fan of anime stuff !
      • Ranma 1/2, Tenchi Muyo, Urusei Yatsura, Photon, You're Under Arrest!... I'd have to go through the shelves (yes, shelves) of Anime @ home to give you the full list... lucky for me that my otherperson's into anime -- but not in the "creepy anime guy" way where he sings along, has posters all over the house, goes to 'viewings' in his pajamas, cosplays, etc. That's just a little too out there for him, or me.

Of course, he *does* have a stuffed Genma. I don't know where that puts him on the scale, though...
        • Wow, that sounds interesting =)

You can cound me in for Tenchi and Ranma, but also Slayers, Lost Universe, Silent Mobius, X (Clamp), El Hazard ..... But I do not have any stuffed Genmas ;)

  • D! I bought the laptop (Dell Insprion) I'm using now 5 years ago this month. It is about time I upgrade, I can't play any games at all and my tiny 4GB hard drive is straining from too many mp3s. I want to get a new laptop but where I work is still shakey and I'm still dealing with new house purchases. Soon, my prrrresioussssss...
  • I've actually been giving away computers. I gave away my two most powerful Windows machines, and am currently only running FreeBSD at home.

I've got a less-than-six-month-old XP laptop from work, however, which sees dual duties at home...
  • approx 1 year ago: Bought a celeron 1ghz and put a cd burner on it, max'd the ram, attached the cable modem, and its my leech box/my wife's box (she also has a laptop to take notes in) (infact, she's using that box as we speak!)

Shortly after that I took my dads Pentium 166 out of the trash and resurrected it- 10/100nic, 128 ram, marble trackball, and a sound card for good measure. That is the machine I am currently on. I use it to /. and VPN to work.

    dig it.

The Powermac 7200 is currently out of commision- waiting for a new version of linux or a complete transformation into a Digital Audio Workstation.
  • because my previous box ate it.

what is with all the polls?
  • Last year, my wife said to me, "There are two of us and one computer. We need another computer."

    Am I lucky or what?

I was going to build a desktop from parts ... until she heard me mention how a laptop would be great for taking on vacation along with a digital camera. Six months later, we finally went on our long postponed vacation to the Grand Canyon and vicinity. I brought back a lot of memories, and two thousand digital pictures on the hard disk of our Dell Inspiron 4100.

    Some fun!
  • Uncle just brought me home a brand spankin new Geforce4 TI 4600 to "test". Basically that means that I install it and let him know if it works or not and he reports back to his video card lady, and then I get to keep the card. All I need now is a new mobo and a hard drive and my puter will be 100% "test" parts :)

Oh almost forgot about the 17" lcd I am "testing"

Yes thats right, I am a bastard :)
  • I got an extra half gig of RAM a few weeks ago. Machine was bought last spring with 256
  • Got my Dell Dimension XPS-T500 back in mid-1999, and it still does most of the stuff I use it for just fine, but there are two areas where it's starting to show its age - one is 3D modelling, the other is games. I'm torn between upgrading the existing box, or giving it away and getting a brand new one...
  • I upgraded the Pentium4 to 384 MB of RAM, and I can see a difference. Not huge (it's running ME) but one can notice a slight speed improvement, and definitely less paging to disk.

I'm also considering upgrading the Celeron 400 from 128 to 256 (whih is the maximum the MB will take), and buy a CD-RW burner for the AthlonXP 2200. For less than 150 for both items, I might just do that later this week or next week.

  • I built a new 2Ghz Athlon from all new parts in July.

I also bought a surplus Sun Ultra 1 this fall, I know its not a new box, but it is new to me. ;-)

Whenever a system becomes completely defined, some damn fool discovers something which either abolishes the system or expands it beyond recognition.

Working...
