Comment Is word substitution translation? (Score 1) 189

Yet to look at the live site, but slashdot is all about immediacy isn't it?

From reading the article linked from slashdot it looks like the thing just substitutes words. Reminds me of my belief as a young kid that to learn a foreign language all I had to do was learn the corresponding words to English...and voila!

Also, there is infinitely more to a translation than merely word substitution & grammar. Translator's often can't agree to how a text should be rendered in another language, & I suspect that the subtleties of language will be a challenge for computer translators for a long time yet.

An anonymous reader writes: With 15+ years as a code monkey, mostly doing back-end systems design/development, I was surprised by recent developments at my workplace that has resulted in my being transitioned into a dual Architect/Managerial role within the next few weeks. While I am somewhat confident in my experience and training for being placed into an architect-type position at this point in my career, I have serious concerns with my being able to properly fulfill the role as manager with my current experiences. Aside from a "Become a manager in 2 days" type books, what resources would you recommend I look to for guidance as I move forward? As always, HELPFUL advice is always welcome.
