This is hooking into the already existing centralized city heating system called "teleriscaldamento" (remote heating). This is already collection heat from nearby factories and when needed, the "waste-to-energy" plant. This is about reusing wasted heat before we burn stuff.

I don't have specific details about this part of the project, but it's part of a larger project that started with collecting heat from local metal smelters and using it in the city's central heating system. I imagine it works in a similar way. (Links in Italian only, translate with your preferred tool ) https://www.ambientebrescia.it... , https://www.giornaledibrescia....).

Absolutely, the press has aligned with the click-bait style of reporting, becouse to keep the news sites profitable they need too to fight for the attention of the users, distracted by the "meme forwarding" by chat or the fake news on social media. It's sad but i understand them, if they don't go this way they will be put out of business due to lack of intrest from the main public. At least in my country, the printed news are still half-decent, since they have a different audience

When the main goal of a business is to find ways to keep users glued to their platforms, creating flaming echo chambers is the natural step. If you want to profit today you will need to do this. Also news networks had to lower their standards to compete with the social networks level of meme-based "information". If we cannot find a way to limit the ways the socialmedia companies can leverage our human weaknesses and lower psychology, a near moderation of the contents can change next to nothing.

With completly automated transportation there will be no need for private transports. Since it will be completly automated why not call in a "taxi-like" (maybe shared for common destinations) flying/road/underground car? Low cost, hi effective, hi availability, no need for private transports. Driving will be just a sport.

Robot Controlled By Rat Brain 170

kkleiner writes "Kevin Warwick, once a cyborg and still a researcher in cybernetics at the University of Reading, has been working on creating biological neural networks that can control machines. He and his team have taken the brain cells from rats, cultured them, and used them as the guidance control circuit for simple wheeled robots. Electrical impulses from the bot enter the batch of neurons, and responses from the cells are turned into commands for the device. The cells can form new connections, making the system a true learning machine."

Solar Power On the White House 405

CartaNova writes "The Obama administration has announced plans to install solar panels and a solar hot water heater on the White House. The Carter administration had previously installed a 32-panel solar system at the White House — which was quietly removed during Reagan's tenure in office. Solar hot water and Photovoltaic firms had been campaigning on this issue for some time."

Sid Meier and the 48-Hour Game 58

The problem is not about the possibility to bind lock with an RFID bit at the security an rfid gives to you.
If it implements some cryptographic mechanism for challange-response ( or some other "secure" authentication ) we can discuss about it...
An RFID is an identification device not an authentication device. Like username without password.
It is weak and readable by all sort of RFID reader.
You enter in a shop and they have your house and car keys...

bye.
