The Future of Harmonix 52

Wired blog Game|Life has up an interview with Alex Rigopulos, CEO of Harmonix (original creators of the Guitar Hero series). They're finishing up work on Guitar Hero for the 360, and then they're moving on to bigger and better things. Chris Kohler had the chance to speak with Rigopulos about that next step for the company. They touch on topics like downloadable content, the awesomeness of the whammy bar, the end of Harmonix's relationship with the extremely popular music-game series, and why people just can't agree on music. Says Rigopulos: "People's taste in music varies. Massively. And music that you love, I might think is garbage, and vice versa. And it's really hard to assemble a single soundtrack that's going to have really broad appeal... [with Guitar Hero 2] we got from the metal community was that they were totally psyched that we were giving them the real goods. And a lot of other people who were Guitar Hero 1 fans saying, well, there are more songs in Guitar Hero II where I just wanted to turn down the speakers."

Submission + - Canadian Company Builds First Quantum Computer

StarvingSE writes: D-Wave Systems, Inc., based near Vancouver, claims to have built the world's first computer based on quantum physics. Its machine is described as a computer that can perform 64,000 calculations at once.

From the article: "There are certain classes of problems that can't be solved with digital computers," said Herb Martin, the firm's CEO, over a decidedly-noisy digital cell phone. "Digital computers are good at running programs; quantum computers are good at handling massive sets of variables."

Perhaps we are finally at the brink of a major breakthrough in supercomputing technology.

It doesn't matter if the phone companies won't stock it. With Cingular, you can put your Cingular sim card into any GSM phone and use it right away. (...as long as it can operate on the frequencies used in North America. Usually these phones are called "Quadband", as opposed to Europe-only "Triband" GSM phones.) I think Verizon, Sprint, US Cellular all use a different network and their phones are incompatible.

You pay more because your phone isn't subsidized by your contract, but you get a nicer and more advanced phone without all the extra charges to use the phone's features.
