I agree with this. Gold will be a great fallback if the dollar collapses but we don't turn to anarchy (which would be unlikely.)

If that time comes, I'd rather have a stockpile of weapons and food then a stockpile of gold.

Guys who stockpile gold don't even really stockpile gold. They own a little record on a website -- maybe a piece of paper -- from an investment bank that says they own gold, rather than having it in their possession. Additionally, even supposing possession, how long do you figure the average Slashdotter is going to be able to hang on to his gold when some warlord decides he wants it (supposing some societal collapse)? Goldbugs are all dumber than pigshit.

The Company Formerly Known As Facebook deserves to die and Zuckerberg should continue pouring money into this trash in service to the suicidal mission. The "metaverse" was just the latest iteration of the Valley having no new ideas but searching desperately for something, because nothing interesting or innovative has happened there since the damned iPhone other than Newsom telling that colony of incels they had to allow some damned houses to be built. The metaverse is dumb, "self-driving" cars won't ever work at scale and are dumb, "AI" is largely a fantasy of Stanford grifters, and so on. Just ungodly sums of money for ideas which are basically just the Juicero, except at least the Juicero was a delivered product. Engineers need to learn to stay in their lane. Go play Duke Nukem on your Beowulf clusters.

Apple doesn’t even kind of need Tesla. Tesla is so far below Apple it might as well be Radio Shack. Tesla isn’t a titan. It’s a sitting duck. A decade from now, Apple will still be chugging along making the stuff it currently makes with iterative improvements. Maybe a couple new things too. Tesla, at best, will be a battery division of one of the companies that know how to actually make cars.

Certainly plenty here with clap like a bunch of baby seals with TBIs — and I definitely agree: It’s high time Amazon hired a moron software engineer with Dunning-Kruger to handle a pointless and nonsensical thing. Doing so for $50k and no bathroom breaks will be tricky, but I have faith in Bezos.

(extremely smooth-brained Slashdot engineer chud voice) Unacceptable. I need to support 2700 desktops running Tabworks and my team has 14 additional with [whichever shitty Linux people use now for no fucking reason]. Normal humans, of which I am definitely one, have these needs too, so I predict failure. More space than a Nomad but still lame.
