First Mr. Taaki, thank you for doing this: Both the interview and helping to open a possible path to decentralized means of exchange. I have two questions: Do you think the program adequately accommodates the people's tendency to lose coins whether by neglecting to back up their wallet, or just through general forgetfulness? Now that Bitcoin has survived it's first huge crash, gained some publicity in the mainstream and caught the eye of the CIA are you more or less confident of it's viability than you were six months ago?

One of the benefits of a home lab is raising the general level of your science literacy. There's a large gap between the cursory understanding scientific method - science in the consumer sense - and doing science - science from the producers perspective. Don't do it for the fame. Do it for the humility.

An anonymous reader writes "I'm currently on the cusp of getting myself a new hobby and making some investments. There are a few areas that interest me greatly, from playing with EEG/ECG and trying to put together a DIY sleep lab, to astronomy, etc. I'm somewhat hesitant to get into these fields because (despite the potentially short-lived enjoyment factor) I'm not convinced they are areas that would lend themselves to making new discoveries in the home and with home equipment, which is what I'd really like to do. I've also read quite a number of articles on 'bio hacking,' and the subject seems interesting, but it also seems futile without an expensive lab (not to mention years of experience). What R&D hobbies do Slashdotters have that provide them with opportunities to make interesting discoveries and potentially chart new territory in the home? Do such hobbies exist?"

German High Court Declares All Software Patentable 330

FlorianMueller writes "Long gone are the times when Europe was that bastion of resistance against software patents and patents on such things as file systems were ruled invalid. In a decision published today, the Federal Court of Justice of Germany upheld a patent on the automatic generation of structured documents (such as XML/HTML) in a client-server setting. The ruling lays out general principles that go beyond the patent at stake: they tear down all barriers to software patentability in the largest EU member state, even though a European patent treaty has been adopted that was intended to exclude software from the scope of patentable subject matter. EU patent examiners recently warned against a drift toward software patents. Software patent critics in Europe fear this will spark more litigation on their continent and increasingly call for defensive measures."
