Journal Dragon Fae's Journal: Genetics are not Toys!
Forget the nudie controversy in art, folks, I got something even jiucier for you. Introducing Alba the glowing green Bunny-Rabbit. Does anyone here see a problem with this? Sweet little Alba was, for the most part, a white rabit like any other . . . except for the fact that it had been given a Flourecent Green Protein gene - 0.o - that's not nice. I could see if perhaps we were trying to cure something, but genetics should not be used to make bunnies 'floresce' green! For one, bio-engineering is not a very stable thing in and of itself. The vector could drop off the genetic information right in the middle of any dna sequence - which could cause disease or death. This should not be done . . . or, at the very least, it should not be done for the sake of art. That's what they call it now. Art. Is anyone else here not okay with this? There is such controversy over genetics as it is, we don't need things like this messing up what progress we've made so far with public opinion. We hardly understand genetics - I don't think we should be useing the technology as loosly as we do - and most certinly not for 'artistic purposes'. For that matter, we still don't even know what all the genes do. It wasn't long ago that the Central Dogma (1 gene -> 1 protein -> 1 trait) was . . . well, a central dogma. We thought only 2% of our genome was important - the rest was apparently considered 'junk'. Now we know that's not entirely true, but there is still so much we have yet to understand. What say you?
