Driver mess in Windows? Use ffdshow (http://ffdshow.sourceforge.net).
Even if you want to use the latest DivX or XviD to watch your movies, you can tell ffdshow to let the codecs play them.
In conjunction with Media Player Classic, it's perfect for any Windows machine.
