Agreed on principle, but I'd attribute the Renaissance more to the decline and fall of the Byzantine Empire. Many Greeks, including great scholars, fled to Italy in the 15th century, both before and after 1453. They played a major role in bringing the classics back to Western Europe. You're right about Arab science, though.

Glyn Moody writes "Peter Murray Rust, a chemist at Cambridge University, was lost for words when he found Oxford University Press's website demanded $48 from him to access his own scientific paper, in which he holds copyright and which he released under a Creative Commons license. As he writes, the journal in question was "selling my intellectual property, without my permission, against the terms of the license (no commercial use)." In the light of this kind of copyright abuse and of the PRISM Coalition, a new FUD group set up by scientific publishers to discredit open access, isn't it time to say enough is enough, and demand free access to the research we pay for through our taxes?"

I was sitting on the #gaim IRC channel earlier today (actually, starting immediately after seeing the article), and the following is a quote of one of the things I heard.

(12:05:45) KingAnt: Hmm, I just noticed this in the slashdot post thing: "but it's open source so expect a MSWin version shortly from Gaim team." (12:07:40) skiy left the room (quit: Read error: 110 (Connection timed out)). (12:08:55) peetah left the room (quit: "Leaving"). (12:09:03) grim: yeah.. lemme jump right on that.. (12:09:04) grim: pfft (12:11:55) Essington [~jason@essington.registered] entered the room. (12:12:00) Err: you didn't expect anything better from a slashdot post, did you? PhoneGaim is not officially affiliated with Gaim, except for the fact that they have common code. So this probably isn't something that should be expected as a Windows port any time soon... at least, not from them.
