Canadian Copyright Group Wants iPod Tax 408

soulxtc writes "Unable to define memory as a 'recording medium,' Canada's Private Copyright Collective goes directly after portable music player devices, memory cards, and anything else that can be used to make private copies. The PCC submitted a proposal to the country's Copyright Board that suggests levies of $5 (Canadian) on devices with up to 1GB of memory, $25 for 1-10 GB, $50 for 10-30 GB, and $75 for over 30 GB. If approved, this propoal would increase the price of a 30-GB iPod by 26%. These collections are intended to compensate artists and labels for the losses they suffer when people 'illegally' copy or transfer music. The PCC is also seeking a new $2 to $10 tax on memory cards. The backbone of digital photography has become tangled up in the fight for making sure music companies get every nickel and dime they feel that they deserve."

I agree. The problem occurs when you ignore the fundies, but the fundies are still hammering their message to the masses. What are you left with? A scientific community that is ignoring the "issue" and a vocal, fundamental population that is influencing the majority of people that watch too much Fox News.

ifo Applestore has a different take on the iPod Express Concept.
Perhaps the most serious glitch was procedural-using e-mail to generate a receipt for the ordinary customer when checking them out with a portable device. Several customers reported being surprised at the requirement, and were reluctant to give out their e-mail addresses for fear of receiving unsolicited marketing e-mail or even spam. Hey, who wanted to admit that your e-mail address was "kickass@gmail.com"? In some cases customers requested a printed receipt, slowing down the otherwise prompt check-out, and in other cases the customer's ISP was blocking mail from Apple so no receipt was ever delivered. [I'll admit true Mac users are more likely to prefer skipping the paper and receiving an e-mail receipt, and probably have a secondary, "disposable" e-mail address.]

...

So while the concept was well-intentioned, and the staff worked hard to make it successful, the iPod Express needs some tweaking before its rolled out again.
