First time I used PNG, I thought the same thing.
Actually, it is just that PNG has a far more
complicated interphase for selecting options.
Once you select the right options, PNG will compress on the average about 10-20% smaller than
a GIF. I've seen as high as 50% smaller. The
only thing I've seen that is better for lossless
compression hasn't been released publicly yet.
When it is, I'll be happy to tell people about it.
