In all honesty, I don't think it should matter how old you are or there should be any other factors that deal with age/sex/race that dictate whether or not you can contribute to such a project.
If you've been giving to the project already and what you've done has helped in anyway in the movement of it forward, even though you may no be old enough to participate by their rules, should it matter how old you are or what your sex or race is? I don't think so.
