Comment Science text books (Score 5, Informative) 741

I am guessing the people who brought him up on charges have never actually read a science textbook. Sure its a little winded and takes a while to get to it, but by reading the average science textbook from jr high and above you can figure out how to create some pretty dangerous chemical reactions that should scale fairly well. Knowing about something and being jailed for it it thought crime. Trying to set limits on the human condition of curiosity and interest could pave the path of a dangerous road.

It would probably be better if the focused their energy on closing security holes and doing their best to stop their consumer operating systems from being the low hanging fruit for botnet makers. I have heard than an ounce of prevention is better than a massive security project to remove the ass of a tick or something to that effect.

Comment Godaddy are still bad hosters. (Score 1) 330

Go daddy is still a bunch of aholes with questionable hosting practices and one of the worst customer portals focused on upselling rather than delivering services. I moved all my domains from them quite some time ago. Recently they were acquired and they have created artificial dns brownouts to sites experiencing additional queries because they have a boost in traffic. They are using this to sell additional services. If you value your internet service you will move away from them even if they no longer support sopa.

Have they actually had anything to show at CES worth looking at? Seems like throwing good money out to show bad products is a bad idea. It makes sense that they should make better products, but it looks like they are just going to focus on saving money.

IEA Warns of Irreversible Climate Change In 5 Years 1105

iONiUM writes "As a follow up to the previous slashdot story, there has been a new release by the International Energy Agency indicating that within 5 years we will have irreversible climate change. According to the IEA, 'There are few signs that the urgently needed change in direction in global energy trends is under way. Although the recovery in the world economy since 2009 has been uneven, and future economic prospects remain uncertain, global primary energy demand rebounded by a remarkable 5% in 2010, pushing CO2 emissions to a new high. Subsidies that encourage wasteful consumption of fossil fuels jumped to over $400bn (£250.7bn).'"

Comment I just want OSX ala carte (Score 1) 774

It would be nice if OSX was sold and supported as a product separate from their hardware. I am using a macbook right now, the hardware is adaquate but the operating system is the reason I bought it. If apple had a hardware logo certification ala novel, a logo cert that actually meant something I would be more likely to continue using osx as my primary operating system on non apple hardware. Apple hardware has almost completely lost its draw for me. The RMA process is slow and clunky, their corporate hardware support is abysmal and their hardware has one of the highest failure rates (second only to sony vaio laptops) I have ever experienced. Hardly what I would consider worth the premium. On top of that there is the mousing options. For that much money I would expect to have a hardware interface that is intuitive. Removing all mouse buttons from the laptop is the exact opposite direction I was hoping they would take. So far I am unimpressed with this hardware revision. I hope the next iteration of OSX becomes a bigger selling point because the look and feel of the hardware is nowhere near worth the price.

$150 Linux Laptop for the Masses 434

Xemu writes "Inspired by Negroponte's laptop for children, the Swedish company Medison is now taking orders for their US$150 Linux laptop, the Medison Celebrity. The laptop is a 1.5 GHz Celeron M 370 with 14 inch screen, wireless network and it comes with Fedora Red Hat pre-installed." Update 2035 GMT by SM: As many readers have pointed out, the more you dig into the details of this company the more fishy it starts to seem. I would suggest any potential buyers be wary on this one.

Xbox Division Posts Loss of $1.9 Billion 150

Just when reduced manufacturing costs were beginning to turn Microsoft's Xbox division around, the weight of the warranty guarantee came crashing down on the company. The Xbox division of Microsoft Entertainment posted a loss of $1.89 billion for the fiscal year. Overall the Entertainment division did well, as sales of the Zune, consoles, and Xbox titles helped push revenues higher. Just the same, as Next Generation reports: "The fourth quarter in the EDD was down, with operating losses increasing 183 percent to $1.2 billion, again due to the billion-dollar-plus warranty charge. Revenues dropped 10 percent from a year ago to $1.16 billion due specifically to 'decreased Xbox 360 console sales.' Microsoft shipped 700,000 consoles during the quarter compared to 1.8 million for the same period a year prior."

AOL's Embarassing Password Woes 192

An anonymous reader writes "AOL.com users may think they have up to sixteen characters to use as a password, but they'd be wrong, thanks to this security artifact detailed by The Washington Post's Security Fix blog: "Well, it turns out that when someone signs up for an AOL.com account, the user appears to be allowed to enter up to a 16-character password. AOL's system, however, doesn't read past the first eight characters." This means that a user who uses "password123" or any other obvious eight-character password with random numbers on the end is in effect using just that lame eight-character password."
