"Vast, vast, VAST majority of voters?" Aren't you overlooking the fact the Obama was elected by a sizeable majority expressly promising health care reform? Aren't you ignoring the many polls that show nearly every part of the health care act is, in fact, very popular with nearly all voters polled? You're spreading Republican misinformation as if it were fact.

I'll give a counter-generalization: Women, by and large, don't even think about whether a machine makes them look more "feminine." Men, on the other hand, are apparently obsessed with the question of whether a device makes them look "masculine." I know women with Android phones and I know women who drive huge ugly trucks. I have yet to meet a man who would even consider driving a VW New Beetle, because "it's a girl's car."

New Handheld Computer Is 100% Open Source 195

metasonix writes "While the rest of the industry has been babbling on about the iPad and imitations thereof, Qi Hardware is actually shipping a product that is completely open source and copyleft. Linux News reviews the Ben NanoNote (product page), a handheld computer apparently containing no proprietary technology. It uses a 366 MHz MIPS processor, 32MB RAM, 2 GB flash, a 320x240-pixel color display, and a Qwerty keyboard. No network is built in, though it is said to accept SD-card Wi-Fi or USB Ethernet adapters. Included is a very simple Linux OS based on the OpenWrt distro installed in Linksys routers, with Busybox GUI. It's apparently intended primarily for hardware and software hackers, not as a general-audience handheld. The price is right, though: $99."

The Race To Beer With 50% Alcohol By Volume 297

ElectricSteve writes "Most of the world's beer has between 4% and 6% alcohol by volume (ABV). The strength of beer achieved by traditional fermentation brewing methods has limits, but a well-crafted beer that is repeatedly 'freeze distilled' can achieve exquisite qualities and much higher alcohol concentrations. An escalation in the use of this relatively new methodology over the last 12 months has seen man's favorite beverage suddenly move into the 40+% ABV realm of spirits such as gin, rum, brandy, whiskey, and vodka, creating a new category of extreme beer. The world's strongest beer was 27% ABV, but amidst an informal contest to claim the title of the world's strongest beer, the top beer has jumped in strength dramatically. This week Gizmag spoke to the brewers at the center of the escalating competition. New contestants are gathering, and the race is now on to break 50% alcohol by volume."

Apple Just Says Yes To iPhone Smoking Game 192

ZosX sends along a puff piece from Wired's Brian X. Chen: "Apple on Monday approved Puff Puff Pass, a $2 game whose objective is to pass a cigarette or pipe around and puff it as many times as you can within a set duration. So much for taking the high road, Apple. The game allows you to choose between smoking a cigarette, a cigar, and a pipe. Then you select the number of people you'd like to light up with (up to five), the amount of time, and a place to smoke (outdoors or indoors). And you're ready to get right on puffing."

The snipes at the liberal arts in this thread perfectly illustrate why engineers make excellent unthinking soldiers. If you're trained to think that all questions of value, philosophy, politics and ethics are merely the irrational quibbles of unintelligent people, then you'll never learn the subjects, or how to evaluate them critically. And if you believe that thinking about or engaging with politics is a waste of time, you will tend to uncritically accept that whatever prejudices you were raised on are "common sense," "the plain truth," or "God's revealed wisdom."

Comment Re:it's called "entertainment" (Score 1) 870

What do you think "entertainment" is? People see movies because they like stories, and stories are always about people in conflict over difficult moral choices. Even the most brainless, pure fun movie has a good guy who makes the difficult moral choice who is conflict with the bad guy who does what is easy and selfish. People talk about the "messages" in movies because that's what stories are really about. "Show business" -- or, as we used to call it, "art" -- is largely about morality. I challenge you to try to write a story that has no "message." You'll be amazed at how boring and entertainment-free it is.

Researchers Claim To Be Able To Determine Political Leaning By How Messy You Are 592

According to a study to be published in The Journal of Political Psychology, you can tell someone's political affiliation by looking at the condition of their offices and bedrooms. Conservatives tend to be neat and liberals love a mess. Researchers found that the bedrooms and offices of liberals tend to be colorful and full of books about travel, ethnicity, feminism and music, along with music CDs covering folk, classic and modern rock, as well as art supplies, movie tickets and travel memorabilia. Their conservative contemporaries, on the other hand, tend to surround themselves with calendars, postage stamps, laundry baskets, irons and sewing materials. Their bedrooms and offices are well lit and decorated with sports paraphernalia and flags — especially American ones. Sam Gosling, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, says these room cues are "behavioral residue." The findings are just the latest in a series of recent attempts to unearth politics in personality, the brain and DNA. I, for one, support a woman's right to clean.
