Tesla, Honda and Toyota make passenger vehicles in the US. GM does not. Tesla and Toyota are the best selling brands in California. ( not sure it that includes trucks ) Point being, there is plenty of demand for passenger cars in the US. GM gave up on making cars years ago. Yet Tesla shows that an American company can make innovative cars in the US. Policy makers have to factor in that the UAW is a strong force against job creation, investment and product innovation.

Amazon invested huge amounts of money building out its warehouse and delivery service. I ordered a webcam last night. It is arriving today. UPS and USPS cannot match that. UPS is unionized. Any large investment by UPS can be held hostage by the union to extract higher pay and extra staffing. The end result is the company does not consider large investment.

If it is unions which do not discourage automation, explain how it is that Tesla's production facilities in the US are so much more productive than those of GM. Heck, Tesla builds passenger cars in the US. GM does not. GM cannot make a profit making cars in the US.

Forcing manufacturers to pay more for manual labor helps some but ignores the many downsides. For example, working in a sophisticated and automated production facility provides opportunity for line workers to advance and improve their skills.

exactly right. GM does not make passenger vehicles in the US because of high labor costs and work rules I read the company has to hire temp workers on Friday because so many UAW employees call in sick that day. As it is, GM cannot invest in a giga press like Tesla has done because the UAW has the legal power to shutdown production.

Name one industry or,company in the US with a unionized workforce which is successful. UPS and USPS cannot invest to compete against Amazon. GM and Ford stock valuation is incredibly low. UAW could buy GM at its bargain price, cut the pay of management and distribute profits to hourly employees. Yet none of the strikers ask for that.

why would the city need money for a new IT security expert? Just replace those who were doing the poor work. And as far as raising taxes being bad for election chances, since when? Voters do not care that others would have to pay more taxes. Much more likely those who run the city know that raising taxes will harm the economy of the city and result in less, not more city revenue.
