Dekorator writes: I would like the Slashdot community to take a look at this excerpt from an article that reviews a book called âoeIf Anyone Builds It, Everyone Dies.â I have not read the book. At some point I will.

I am more interested in this excerpt, specifically the first six sentences, in which I find the phrase âoefundamentally mysterious.â Is this a mischaracterization? Or am I focused on a loose screw in a burning house? I really think it sucks when agnostic/mystic mumbo jumbo arrives early in an explanation. Feel free to correct me and restore my âoeaweââ¦

âoeAmong these is that we donâ(TM)t really understand how generative AI works. In the past, computer programs were hand coded â" every aspect of them was designed by a human. In contrast, the latest models arenâ(TM)t âoecraftedâ, theyâ(TM)re âoegrownâ. We donâ(TM)t understand, for example, how ChatGPTâ(TM)s ability to reason emerged from it being shown vast amounts of human-generated text. Something fundamentally mysterious happened during its incubation. This places a vital part of AIâ(TM)s functioning beyond our control and means that, even if we can nudge it towards certain goals such as âoebe nice to peopleâ, we canâ(TM)t determine how it will get there.â
