Journal Degrees's Journal: I want my... I want my... I want my K D E.... 12

I really dislike Guhnome. I wiped my work laptop and put a beta of SLED 10 on it, because that is what the next version of Evolution is being written toward. The people I talk to report that Evolution is far more stable on Guhnome than on KDE, and Novell isn't trying to write Evolution to work on KDE. Evo = Ximian, Guhnome = Ximian, why would they try to make Evo KDE friendly?

Well, I like KDE. I dislike Guhnome. I can't be the only person that see the deficiencies in it.

Would someone please tell me how, in the Gnome Desktop Environment, to make folder contents list in long form? In Winders, there is a menu option: View, Details. In KDE I had a button for same. In Gnome - nothing.

And the help text isn't working either. Don't know if it is because I'm running beta code or what - but I'm seriously less than thrilled.

Oooooooh! The screen blanking routine is a slow fade to black!!!! Oooooooh!

I guess I'm just annoyed because I've changed environments, and the new environment gives me significantly less. I could back and install KDE - but that road leads where?

Bah humbug.

Heh - the QOTM is: "Blessed is he who has reached the point of no return and knows it, for he shall enjoy living. -- W.C. Bennett"

View -> View as list (looks like you can even make it permenent by clicking the little circle)? I can't say much, since I rarely use the gnome file browser. Hell I would be happy with fvwm for as much as I use any feature of Gnome (or any other desktop) :-D Which distro are you using?

    • Unfortunately, the distribution I am using doesn't have "View -> View as list" in the file system browser....

I did eventually find a way to change to a list view: it was under Edit -> Preferences. IIRC (I'm at home now), there is a tab for Display settings.

I'm using Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) 10 beta 11. It's beta code.

    • Yeah, Ubuntu rocks... But it's Gnome.
You want KUbuntu for the KDE junk.
    • I like the customizability of the KDE stuff. For example, within the Konsole program, I can use the menus at the top to define the size of the terminal window, and make that the default. (I like a 160 x 70 character console). If that is a configurable setting in Gnome - I haven't found it.

Which ultimately is the problem. I can't find *any* super-tweaky settings in Gnome. It's like some designer thought that the problem was too many controls, and removed half of them. Argh!

I get to stick with SLED, because

  • I dunno why folks think that they must use one or the other with gnome or kde. There are two viable options otherwise. First is use neither (my choice) and the other is install both.

Personally I use windowmaker, very small and tight window manager. Over all I use firefox, thunderbird, gimp, open office, eclipse, audacity, and rxvt. Basically a general set of application. If I need to list files I'll pop up konqueror (yeah I know, kde), but I much rather use a terminal window when I do stuff.

    • You have a good point. If this were a home environment, or a group of designers at work, you are correct - it wouldn't matter, and people should just use what they like.

In my case, we are looking at a Master License Agreement with Novell that would let us deploy the OS on as many machines as we have (which is about 1,700). We aren't really near wanting to do that - but it is a great option to have. ;-)

But it also means going with the flow. If we were to wipe a bunch of machines and start over on Linux, th
