Submission + - CS Majors: Is the "Where" important? 4

An anonymous reader writes: I'm a high school senior that is trying to pick a college to attend. I've been accepted by two comparably selective schools. One school is a highly regarded tech school, and the other is a highly regarded liberal arts institution. I prefer the liberal arts college, but the computer science program is small, graduating about a dozen students a year. The course load is heavily theory based; programming languages are taught in later years.

Would the tech school vs non tech school matter? Are CS majors from non-tech school considered inferior? What would an HR department think?

Oklahoma Leaks 10,000 Social Security Numbers 245

DrJokepu writes "Apparently the folks at the Department of Corrections of Oklahoma just forgot to use common sense when they created the state's Sexual and Violent Offender Registry. By putting SQL queries in the URLs, they not only leaked the personal data of tens of thousands of people, but enabled literally anyone with basic SQL knowledge to put his neighbor/boss/enemies on the sexual offender list. Fortunately, after the author of the blog The Daily WTF notified the department about the issue, the site went down for 'routine maintenance' on April 13 2008."

Journal Journal: Cost of Text Messaging

Apart from "because people will pay it", why do US cell providers charge so much for text messaging? Text messages place very little strain on the networks compared to voice calls, because of their small throughput and high latency. And yet, it is cheaper using most providers and plans to make a 5 minute call than to send a single text message.

Comment Re:Friend codes (Score 5, Informative) 148

Based off of the DS' implementation of friend codes, you can play with random people (and in the case of Clubhouse Games it removes the drawing/chat and instead just lets you pick standard questions/comments as well). The only thing friend codes are for is for playing with your friends, not making it so you cannot play with anyone else.

Of course, you can select to play with only those who you are friends with, but that does not prohibit you from being randomly matched up with an opponent who you have not exchanged codes with.

The only game that I know of that you had to have a friend code for was Animal Crossing, and that merely because the average person wouldn't want random visitors trashing their towns.

Games that allow random play:
Mario Kart
Tetris
Clubhouse Games
Metroid Prime Hunters

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few more, but those are the ones I have.
