Submission + - New malware targets IE, Firefox, Chrome (arstechnica.com)

Jake writes: Microsoft is warning about a new piece of malware, Rogue:MSIL/Zeven, that auto-detects a user's browser and then imitates the relevant malware warning pages from Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome. The fake warning pages are very similar to the real thing; you have to look closely to realize they aren't the real thing. The ploy is a basic social engineering scheme, but in this case the malware authors are relying on the user's trust in their browser, a tactic that hasn't been seen before.

Beyond the warning pages, the actual malware looks like the real deal: it allows you to scan files, tells you when you're behind on your updates, and enables you to change your security and privacy settings. Performing a scan results in the product finding malicious files, but of course it cannot delete them unless you update, which requires paying for the full version. Attempting to buy the product will open an HTML window that provides a useless "Safe Browsing Mode" with high-strength encryption. To top it all off, the rogue antivirus webpage looks awfully similar to the Microsoft Security Essentials webpage; even the awards received by MSE and a link to the Microsoft Malware Protection Center have been copied.

Google Audits Street View Data Systems 229

schliz writes "Google's plans to upgrade to high-definition Street View in Australia are on hold until it completes a rigorous internal audit of the processes, it announced today. The company is currently being investigated by international regulators about possible privacy breaches when it became known that its Street View vehicles were capturing not only publicly available SSIDs and MAC addresses, but also samples of payload data transmitted over these networks."

Sorry, but the first thing that came to my mind after reading your post....

Let me introduce myself I'm a social disease
I've come for your wealth leave you on your knees
No time for feeling sorry, I got here on my own
I won't ask for mercy, I choose to walk alone

What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine too
If you shake my hand better count your fingers

What if I do get caught? what if there is no judgment?
If I'm right I lose nothing, if you're right I lose it all
I ought to get caught because I'm doing something wicked
I'm guilty haunted by my fear and the only consequences
Are dread and the fugitive mind

You built walls to protect you so no one will infect you
Pursued by those out there that vanish in thin air
Come a long way to find what you really left behind
You don't know when the end is but it's coming fast

What's yours is mine and what's mine is mine too
If you shake my hand better count your fingers

What if I do get caught? what if there is no judgment?
If I'm right I lose nothing, if you're right I lose it all

One small detail here is that the guard, although incompetent, has not broken any laws, and will (or should) be punished by his employer (being fired), and the thief is a criminal punishable by law, and will (or should) rot in jail for his crimes. In a perfect world we wouldn't need security guards in the first place. Having crapy security is no excuse for absolving criminals who take advantage of the same.

Exactly what I was thinking... if I remember correctly -- and I probably don't -- changing the water temperature by even a couple of degrees can have a devastating effect on marine life, specially coral reef that are so sensitive to any changes (pH, temperature,...)
But you know what... we don't need them anyways, I am sure this new system will come with a screen saver that simulates all the marine life it destroys.
