While it's great to be able to get along with a coworker or boss, it's called 'work' for a reason. You are not paid to make friends. You are paid to be productive. The buddy-buddy dynamic might get in the way of that, sometimes...the boss might have a valid criticism but might be unwilling to say anything for fear of damaging the friendship. Or maybe the boss might be your best friend in the world, but you really do deserve to be fired for your 6.5 hours of Slashdot-viewing a day. Being friends is good, don't get me wrong...but it shouldn't be the sole reason to hire someone.
