Submission + - Americans win Nobel physics prize

Davemania writes: CNN reports that the Nobel Prize in Physics has been award to John C. Mather and George F. Smoot for their contribution to the big-bang Theory.

From the CNN article

Mather, 60, works at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., and Smoot, 61, works at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, Calif.
Their work was based on measurements done with the help of the NASA-launched COBE satellite in 1989. They were able to observe the universe in its early stages about 380,000 years after it was born. Ripples in the light they detected also helped demonstrate how galaxies came together over time.
"The very detailed observations that the laureates have carried out from the COBE satellite have played a major role in the development of modern cosmology into a precise science," the academy said in its citation.

Submission + - Evolution Major Vanishes From Approved Federal Lis

Davemania writes: New York Times reports that an Evolution biology subject has disappeared from a list of acceptable fields of study for recipients of a federal education grant for low-income college students. The Education department has described this as a Clerical Mistake but others are skeptical about this. "Scientists who knew about the omission also said they found the clerical explanation unconvincing, given the furor over challenges by the religious right to the teaching of evolution in public schools. "It's just awfully coincidental," said Steven W. Rissing, an evolutionary biologist at Ohio State University."

Submission + - The FBI's Upgrade That Wasn't

Davemania writes: Washington Post reports that the FBI's attempt to modernize their department has once failed again. The 170 million dollar Virtual case File system, the agency 2nd attempt to go paperless is reported to be useless. The finger seems to be pointing at the FBI leadership, greedy contractor and bad software management. You have to wonder why projects such as these are so badly managed especially post 9/11.
