I have just fallen deeper in love with SMBC. That expresses how I and all my non-English oriented friends feel about reading. I absolutely hated English classes because we'd read one book for weeks and go obnoxiously slow, and in turn came to hate novels because of an association with effort I didn't have or want to use.

Then I discovered science fiction.

This. This and everything about it. When I was in high school, every class had an End of Course Test that was supposed to gauge if you learned enough about the class to pass, but we had this test in addition to a final exam, and this EOCT was factored into our grade. There were instances of students making A's but gaining no credit because of making less than 70 on the EOCT, and the opposite too. In addition to that, these tests were between the midterms and final exams, and up to two weeks in each class were lessons about the test format and how to strategically pass the test.

At least it wasn't a flash object website. I hate when StumbleUpon gives me those. I have FlashBlock, so when I get one of those, I just assume it's not worth my time to use those. They're memory hogs anyway, especially in a window that's maximized.

If there is an outage on the plane, all instruments will cease functioning, with some exceptions. Most notably the magnetic compass. That way, if all goes wrong, you can still find your heading. Aligning runways in true directions would be a good solution, were it not for the fact that we'd need an electronic instrument to keep up with detection of cardinal North. Magnets require no such thing, and provide a useful tool in emergency situations.

Man Arrested For Exploiting Error In Slot Machines 611

An anonymous reader writes "A man awaiting trial in Pennsylvania was arrested by Federal agents on Jan. 4, and accused of exploiting a software 'glitch' within slot machines in order to win payouts. The exploit may have allowed the man to obtain more than a million dollars from casinos in Pennsylvania and Nevada, and officials say they are investigating to see if he used the method elsewhere. The accused stated that 'I'm being arrested federally for winning on a slot machine. Let everybody see the surveillance tapes. I pressed buttons on the machine on the casino. That's all I did.' Apparently, slot machine software errors are fairly common. The lesson here seems to be that casinos can deny you a slot machine win any time they wish by claiming software errors, and if you find an error that you can exploit, you may find yourself facing Federal charges for doing so."
