I simply think that the point he's trying to make is...by the time we have our Utopia, it'll be just in time for the aliens that we haven't been paying enough attention to finding to come and take it. Or for an asteroid to come and pummel us. There goes our utopia, and furthermore, since we put spacetravel on the back burner, we don't even have another potential utopia to flee to.
