Submission + - Hacktivist Martin Gottesfeld in indefinite solitary, transferred to 2nd "CMU" (creators.com)

Danngggg writes: Anonymous hacktivist Marty Gottesfeld was first covered by Slashdot in 2016, when he was rescued by at sea by a Disney cruise liner and then arrested by the FBI. He was initially prosecuted by Carmen Ortiz, the same U.S. attorney who dogged Aaron Swartz into suicide, after he defended sick teen Justina Pelletier from extreme abuse in the psych ward of Boston Children's hospital.

He's been practicing journalism from inside the Bureau of Prisons, most recently highlighting sexual abuse by Todd Royer, the unit manager for death row as well as for Marty's home for the last three years, the "Communications Management Unit" at FCI Terre Haute, in Terre Haute, IN. The CMU was created in 9/11 era to hold terrorists. They also appear to send political prisoners there.

In August prison officials told him that he was being recommended to "step down" out of the CMU. But this week he was transferred to the other CMU in Marion, IL. They are keeping him in indefinite solitary confinement without cause or explanation; Sunday marked the beginning of month 5. One of these two CMUs is likely where the U.S. will place Assange if extradited.

Submission + - Aaron Swartz's federal judge gives "hacker who cared too much" 10 years (zdnet.com)

Danngggg writes: Many will remember Martin Gottesfeld since he was arrested on a speedboat coming from Cuba. He volunteered at trial that he and his wife had had just been denied political asylum by Castro. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bl20Fy8wPPY). Gottesfeld has said he did it to defend the life of an innocent child named Justina Pelletier. On Thursday, the same judge that over saw the Aaron Swartz case sentenced the Anonymous hacktivist to 10 years in federal prison for a DDoS of Boston Children's Hospital, Harvard-affiliated hospitals, and Wayside Youth and Family. The sentence included $440,000 in restitution, 3 years supervised release, and other conditions. The week before, Gottesfeld docketed a 690 page affidavit (including exhibits) documenting the judge's conflicts of interest and why he doesn't belong anywhere near the case. That's available on the FreeMartyG website: https://freemartyg.com/690-pag...

Local news spoke to his wife after the sentencing hearing as well. Link is available here:

Submission + - Hacktivist Jailed by Ortiz Excluded from Aaron Swartz Day by FreeChelsea Leader? (huffingtonpost.com)

Danngggg writes: As you may recall from Slashdot last year, alleged Anonymous hacktivist Martin Gottesfeld has been imprisoned without bail since federal agents arrested him on board a Disney Cruise ship in February of 2016 to face hacking charges brought by controversial former U.S. attorney Carmen Ortiz. Though he’s the only activist after Aaron Swartz to face a felony CFAA indictment from Ortiz, apparently Aaron Swartz Day organizer and Chelsea Manning archivist Lisa Rein doesn’t want to include Gottesfeld in the festivities this year. So, he has taken to HuffPost to argue that his story should be told this November 4th and, perhaps with a sense of irony, to publish some potentially scandalous Signal messages allegedly sent by Rein to his wife revealing what seems to be disdain for hacking in general and Anonymous in particular. Indeed, Rein seems to borrow from the movie Mean Girls in her contemptuous rejection of Mrs. Gottesfeld’s appeals on behalf of her embattled husband. What does the Slashdot crowd have to say about whether Gottesfeld’s story belongs at Aaron Swartz Day as well as Rein’s alleged attitude towards his significant other?

“One might think that my voice would be welcomed at Aaron Swartz Day given all that the late Internet/freedom of information activist and I share in common. For starters, we were both indicted under the same controversial federal law, the CFAA, by the same Boston U.S. Attorney’s Office and indeed under the tenure of the same notorious U.S. Attorney, Carmen Ortiz.

Both of us have been persecuted for doing the moral thing; Aaron for trying to make taxpayer-funded research available to the general public and me for stopping the torture of an innocent child”

Submission + - Imprisoned Man Explains Why He Became An Activist Hacker

Danngggg writes: Alleged Anonymous hacker Martin Gottesfeld has released another statement to the Huffington Post, in which he explains his origins as a human rights hacktivist. Gottesfeld is on day 13 of a prison hunger strike and has reported to have lost 15 pounds. He is demanding presidential candidates pledge to help prevent institutional child abuse .
Here's an excerpt from his statement [From Prison with Love, Why I Became an Activist Hacker]: To start, let me apologize, first-person short form really isn’t my thing. I’m an engineer, and I usually prefer the cold, impersonal, objective third person factual statement. However, others have suggested a piece like this follow up on my previous writing. This really shouldn’t be about me, but telling this story may be a good way to spread some obscure but vital facts.
