Feed Engadget: Power outage halts Samsung's flash memory production, shortages expected (engadget.com)

Samsung, the worldwide leader in flash memory production, has been forced to "shut down six of its chip production lines after a power outage occurred at a plant near Seoul," and while recent reports suggest that "operations should be restored within a day," the lasting effects could linger on for quite some time. Reportedly, the outage occurred at Samsung's Giheung complex and disrupted production of flash memory, DRAM, and logic chips, and while this may not sound too significant to the average outsider, estimates are already pegging losses at around $54 billion. Notably, Samsung wouldn't say whether or not the hiccup will affect supplies of memory chips to Apple (one of its top customers), but analysts are already purporting that we could see "a severe shortage of NAND chips" and increased prices in the coming weeks.

Submission + - Diebold Voting Machines Vulnerable to Virus Attack

mcgrew writes: "PC world is reporting in the linked "printer friendly version" that

Diebold Election Systems Inc. voting machines are not secure enough to guarantee a trustworthy election, and an attacker with access to a single machine could disrupt or change the outcome of an election using viruses, according to a review of Diebold's source code.

"The software contains serious design flaws that have led directly to specific vulnerabilities that attackers could exploit to affect election outcomes," read the University of California at Berkeley report, commissioned by the California Secretary of State as part of a two-month "top-to-bottom" review of electronic voting systems certified for use in California.

The assessment of Diebold's source code revealed an attacker needs only limited access to compromise an election.
Oddly, my state of Illinois, long known for election fraud, has paper trails (at least in my county) and according to Black Box Voting doesn't use Diebold anywhere."

I'm a linux guy, but I have to say, Apple has done a great job with OS X. I always disliked OS 9 (it was so damn ugly! comon, you agree!), but OS X made me think twice. My opinion is slowly moving in favor of Apple because of the great things they've done recently. While I'll never get rid of a standard linux desktop, I think my next computer purchase will be a Mac. I'm not the only one either. A good majority of my friends also feel the same way. I don't think linux is gonna overtake Apple. Both will become competators for Microsoft, because both are making excellent progress in there respective fields. It will be fun to see how things play out in the next 5 years....
