I agree with you to some extent, if someone buys a machine with a processor nearing 3Ghz for doing word processing and spreadsheet stuff. But try switching back to a 1Ghz after gaming, doing CAD, or 3D animation on the latest and greatest and you'd have a different story. How much power your software needs is all in the application.
