Found a solution via Firefox Forums.
Now, firefox -remote 'ping()' should be firefox -a firefox -remote 'ping()'. Also, firefox -remote 'openURL(http://slashdot.org/, new-tab)' should be firefox -a firefox -remote 'openURL(http://slashdot.org/, new-tab)'. Etc.
Now, firefox -remote 'ping()' should be firefox -a firefox -remote 'ping()'. Also, firefox -remote 'openURL(http://slashdot.org/, new-tab)' should be firefox -a firefox -remote 'openURL(http://slashdot.org/, new-tab)'. Etc.
