If Rupert Murdock sells you a portable reader, you will be stuck with only being able to read news his agency's put out. I don't care as much about the coping or printing of it, and I doubt they would either. But the fact that your stuck with a device that will only feed you certain news is what I was using as a hardware DRM.

Anything other then their own device distributing their news, and they end up back in the same boat with the internet. People getting around whatever subscription or ad-based model they have by using devices that just clip it all out.

Once you have a happy DRM'd subscription base, you can fire your good expensive writers and hire on new sellouts who work for either ad-money or next to nothing. The masses won't know the diff, they are paying a monthly fee, and news pops up on their device everyday.

Doesn't matter if its good or not. Its news right? And besides, you own the device, and already have it linked to your bank account in a way that you never even see that monthly transaction happen. Seems almost free.

Liquid Lakes On Saturn's Moon Confirmed 188

Riding with Robots writes "Scientists have been using the robotic spacecraft Cassini to explore what looked to be large lakes of hydrocarbons on the surface of Saturn's planet-sized moon Titan. But they couldn't be entirely sure that the features were actually liquid lakes, and not simply very smooth, solid material. Now, new findings seem to confirm that the observations really do show extensive seas of liquid ethane and other hydrocarbons. In fact, Titan seems to have an entire 'water' cycle of ethane evaporation, rain and rivers."

Google Says Complete Privacy Does Not Exist 543

schliz writes "In a submission to court, Google is arguing that in the modern world there can be no expectation of privacy. Google is being sued by a Pennsylvania couple after their home appeared on Google's Street View pages. The couple's house is on a private road clearly marked as private property." Here is our previous story about Google Street View privacy issues.

Air Force Looks To Laser-Proof Its Weapons 347

slugo writes "This wired.com article has probably the coolest laser destruction video you have ever seen. The video shows the Israeli and US Air Force working on laser defense systems. The US Air Force is starting to look for ways to laser-proof its bombs and missiles — with spray-on coatings, no less. They think everyone is going to figure this laser thing out sometime and need a defense against what they are already very good at — shooting things out of the sky with a laser."

Canada Comet Lengthened the Ice Age 66

Iddo Genuth writes "Recent geological evidence gathered in Ohio and Indiana has been verified by a University of Cincinnati assistant professor as support of a comet theory, claiming a comet explosion over earth was the cause of drastic changes to life on our planet. This evidence strengthens initial data collected over a year ago. The explosion, which occurred over what is now Canada, caused the extinction of animals and cultures and lengthened the Ice Age nearly 13,000 years ago that should have been coming to an end."

Yahoo Offers Compensation For Unplayable Music 143

DrEnter writes "According to this article, Yahoo will offer some compensation after they turn off their DRM servers and Yahoo Music customers will no longer be able to access their music. The company said Wednesday it is offering coupons on request for people to buy songs again through Yahoo's new partner, RealNetworks Inc.'s Rhapsody. Those songs will be in the MP3 format, free of copy protection. Refunds are available for users who 'have serious problems with this arrangement,' Yahoo said. Nice to see them step up and do something, especially without trading one DRM scheme for another."

Yes, TA was very good! I always went Hunter/Beastmaster. There was just something about having a group of big ass dragons follow you around that...made things much more fun. =)

Unfortunatly, I was forced to leave my local BBS when MajorMUD came on board. Everyone flooded there. Within the year, even the chat died off. The user list showed everyone in MM. And most of them just scripted 24/7. Oh well. Time moves on.
