Comment Re:Teachers teach, graders should grade... (Score 1) 408

If you were allowed to grade the work you do at the office, what would you give yourself?

Talk about a hopelessly false analogy. If your job consisted of filling jars with water, and some jars came to you with their lids screwed on tight and you weren't allowed to do anything about it, how well do you think you'd get paid? The jar analogy is used in education not as a reference to inherent ability/intelligence in the student, but to the attitudes and resources that they have and are surrounded by. The grades that teachers give out reflect only the performance of the children receiving them, not of the effort put forth by the teachers -- and not for the self-serving reasons you suggest. A teacher can't make parents be more supportive, can't prevent a student from filling his head with an attitude that intelligence is to be mocked. A teacher can't go back in time and make the parents read to their children every night. These factors, not the abilities of the teacher, are what determines the differences in learning between two kids of similar intelligence.

Gumstix sells an audio daughtercard, as well as an ethernet one. (Possibly on the same card) None have USB host capability yet, but supposedly that's coming in the *next* round of upgrades based on the 27 series XScale. Still not gonna be $100, but 3 out of 4 ain't bad.

Driving Plan 9 226

Glenda_lives_on writes "OSnews has an alternative OS review on Plan 9. Plan 9 is a research OS produced by Bell Labs. It was open sourced a few years back, and has enjoyed a revival of sorts. Los Alamos National Labs is continuing to favor Plan 9 for their new generation of super computing because its the fastest thing out there. I have downloaded and ran Plan 9 before. In fact the Plan 9 live cd sits here on my desk. Its not an operating system for noobs however, and lacks some graphical refinement. Plan 9 is a very cool and a interesting test drive however. Its definitely worth the price of admission (free) for exploring, and education."

OpenDocument Alliance to Fight Digital Dark Age 185

OSS_ilation writes "A consortium of vendors and academic institutions -- including IBM, Sun Microsystems and the American Library Association -- has announced today that they are forming the OpenDocument Alliance as part of an effort to promote open file standards worldwide. The group will support the one truly open standard file format, OpenDocument, which is an XML-based file format used saving and exchanging editable office documents such as text documents, spreadsheets and presentations. Sun's Simon Phipps said he believed ODF would allow future generations to view all of today's digital docs and prevent a digital Dark Age from occurring."
