Comment Why aren't we teaming up? (Score 1) 209

Each AI will react and learn differently, if the goal is to mimic the brain, why aren't we teaming up AI with people? I want an interface that learns me and my habits, how to react to them, how to respond, etc. The more people that could work and train different AI's the more adaptable they could become in the future. We learn from experience, we have a lot to teach...

Learning Joomla! 1.5 Extension Development 73

Michael J. Ross writes "Every major content management system (CMS) offers considerable functionality for building Web sites out of the box. But to get the most out of any CMS, its functionality must be extended through the addition of modules, most of which are created by third-party developers. For instance, a given CMS may need to be supplemented by an e-commerce module in order to use that CMS for building an online store. Joomla, one of the most widely used CMSs, is no exception. Web developers interested in creating their own Joomla extensions can read Learning Joomla! 1.5 Extension Development, authored by Joseph LeBlanc." Read below for the rest of Michael's review.

SoHo NAS With Good Network Throughput? 517

An anonymous reader writes "I work at a small business where we need to move around large datasets regularly (move onto test machine, test, move onto NAS for storage, move back to test machine, lather-rinse-repeat). The network is mostly OS X and Linux with one Windows machine (for compatibility testing). The size of our datasets is typically in the multiple GB, so network speed is as important as storage size. I'm looking for a preferably off-the shelf solution that can handle a significant portion of a GigE; maxing out at 6MB is useless. I've been looking at SoHo NAS's that support RAID such as Drobo, NetGear (formerly Infrant), and BuffaloTech (who unfortunately doesn't even list whether they support OS X). They all claim they come with a GigE interface, but what sort of network throughput can they really sustain? Most of the numbers I can find on the websites only talk about drive throughput, not network, so I'm hoping some of you with real-world experience can shed some light here."

Comment JMS's Joe's Comics (Score 1) 218

JMS currently has two monthly comic book titles in print with Top Cow called Midnight Nation, and Rising Stars. Both are very, very good books, Rising Stars is a 24 issue storyline (I believe they are on issue 17 or thereabouts now), and Midnight Nation is a 12 issue storyline (I believe on issue 10...).

If you want to get a real taste of an interesting perspective on the future, read Rising Stars, it's worth picking up the trade. Midnight Nation is about a man that has to walk from LA to NY to get his soul back in one year, all the while being in a kind of forgotten existence reality. Both are fantastic titles, if you like any of JMS's work these are a must-read...
