Comment Re:i ignore voice mail (Score 1) 393

With Verizon at least there's the option to do this, you enter your voice mailbox (*86, or dial your own number) and after listening to all the 'skipped messages' in your box you'll have the option of sending a message. Enter your target's phone number, leave the message, hang up. Works great for when you want to leave bad news for the boss, without having to actually interact with him. ;-)

Hang on if I'm understanding what everyone is saying. We're going to take hundreds of tons of metal, people, and highly flammable liquid, hurl them into the air at high speeds, not just once but thousands of times per day all over the country, and not expect shit to happen?

Don't get me wrong, I understand we want to do everything in our power to make flight as safe as possible. But this is the first known incident of a dual flameout due to bird strikes in the history of commercial flight, right? I'd say in the 70-odd years we've been doing this, that's low enough to be acceptable risk.

I don't know about CDO/OCD/Whatever you want to call it, but it just seems like a normal geek thing. See Nerd Sniping for an example.

It's probably why geeks are so smart, we all have a curiosity about things we don't understand, rather than just shrugging and saying 'Oh well' we actively find a solution to a problem, or the reason things work the way they do.

Man Hides Castle Behind Hay Bales

A UK farmer built an entire mock castle and kept it hidden behind bales of hay for 4 years to avoid building regulations. The builder wants to take advantage of a provision of planning law that allows buildings without planning permission to be declared legal if no objections have been made after four years. The county council is not happy and is moving their mock seige weaponry towards the farm.

Feed Caribbean Corals In Danger Of Extinction: Climate Change, Warmer Waters Cited As (sciencedaily.com)

Caribbean coral species are dying off, indicating dramatic shifts in the ecological balance under the sea, a new scientific study of Caribbean marine life shows. The study found that 10 percent of the Caribbean's 62 reef-building corals were under threat, including staghorn and elkhorn corals. These used to be the most prominent species but are now candidates to be listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

On the eve of World Oceans Day, a group of over 100 scientists from 15 countries has revealed new evidence for the declining state of Europe's 4 regional seas. New models predict dire consequences for the sea unless European countries take urgent action to prevent further damage from current and emerging patterns of development.

Submission + - Harvard Physicists Bring Light to a Complete Halt

tetrikphimvin writes: "In a quantum mechanical sleight of hand, Harvard physicists have shown that they can not only bring a pulse of light, the fleetest of nature's particles, to a complete halt, but also resuscitate the light at a different location and let it continue on its way.
"It's been a wonderful problem to try to wrap your brain around," said Lene Vestergaard Hau, a professor of physics at Harvard and senior author of a paper describing the experiment that appears today in the journal Nature. "There are so many doors that open up." This is also noted in Harvard's Gazette here, which includes video links."

Submission + - Microsoft slugs Mac users with Vista tax

An anonymous reader writes: Mac users wanting to run Vista on their Macintosh will have to buy an expensive version of Vista if they want to legally install it on their systems. The end-user license agreement for the cheaper versions of Vista (Home Basic and Home Premium) explicitly forbids the use of those versions on virtual machines (ie Macs pretending to be PCs).
