Another good comparison: Schneier calculated, conservatively, in his recent summary of the situation, that the scanners are probably safe enough to only cause deadly cancer in 16 out of every billion passengers. An acceptable risk, perhaps--but *still* greater than the chances of being killed by a terrorist.

This is a 12.5mm drive, which means it's too big for the MacBooks and the 15in MacBook Pro, as they require 9.5mm drives. So for now we're stuck with these awful unreliable Panasonic drives that Apple seems to love (presumably because they're so cheap) which cannot be patched for RPC1.

Submission + - Psiphon Now Available for Download

eldavojohn writes: "Project Psiphon has been released for public download under the GPL. CNN has coverage of the Canadian research project that 'works by first allowing a person in a country like Canada that does not censor Internet content to set up a user name and a password for a person in a country that does — China, for example.' While this idea is certainly nothing new to Slashdot, the fact that software like Psiphon is becoming publicly available is interesting. For a quick simplified "How it works," Psiphon has a Flash demonstration."

MPAA Sues Company For Selling Pre-Loaded iPods 393

ColinPL writes, "The MPAA has launched yet another 'defensive attack,' this time on a small business that is pre-loading movie DVDs onto iPods and reselling them. The original DVDs of the movies that are loaded are also given to the customer. The MPAA is claiming that the service Load 'N Go Video offers is completely illegal because ripping a DVD is against the DMCA. The MPAA is also suing the company for copyright violation."

Journal Journal: New project

Okay, so the experiment running an FTP server with all my music and movies didn't last, because now I'm at home for the summer and it's not exactly practical to run a high-capacity server with large files through a DSL connection.

On to the next project!

Journal Journal: Rescomp sucks my balls 2

I just got back online, my connection having been dropped by my university's Residential Computing department a few hours ago. This is the nth time this has happened in the past few weeks, where n is a number much larger than I would like it to be. I'm still trying to get it sorted out, but if Rescomp's track record means anything, it will happen many more times over the next few months.

Journal Journal: Noise - new fans - downtime

Okay everyone, as promised, I'm giving fair warning before what will hopefully be the next time my server goes down.

Journal Journal: Server 5

Since I've been operating this server for a while, and it has gone down several times without my having any way of providing an explanation to those who were downloading and lost their connections, I've decided to start making journal entries to warn people of downtime when possible, and to explain it after the fact otherwise.

For those who haven't been visiting my server, take a look.
