Submission + - New Theory Explains Periodic Mass Extinctions

i_like_spam writes: The theory that the dinosaurs were wiped out by an asteroid impact, the K-T extinction, is well known and supported by fossil and geological evidence. Asteroid impact theory does not apply to the other fluctuations in biodiversity, however, which follow an approximate 62 million-year cycle. As reported in Science news, a new theory seems to explain periodic mass extinctions. The new theory found that oscillations in the Sun relative to the plane of the Milky Way correlate with changes in biodiversity on Earth. The researchers suggest that an increase in the exposure of Earth to extragalatic cosmic rays causes mass extinctions. Here is the original paper describing the finding.

From the way a lot of people are talking you'd think this scanner follows every car all around town and records every visited location. That's not what it does, though. It sits on top of the squad car like a radar gun and scans license plates, then compares them with a list of stolen cars and licenses owned by wanted felons. It's not listing everywhere your car went, it's not a police version of your travel plans, it's showing one place that you went, probably just some random road where the policeman is looking for speeders. I don't understand how anyone's privacy is violated, unless you don't want the cops to know that you were driving down Periwinkle Lane last Thursday at 4, or you think that criminals have the right to not be apprehended following a computer-assisted process. Perhaps the database shouldn't be permanent, or maybe it should only save matches, but the information of where your car was at any given time, seen only be police (and none of the police care enough to look at it, probably. They'd rather let the auto-matching to the work) is harmless unless you stole the car or you're a wanted criminal, in which case there shouldn't be any expectation of license plate privacy.

Submission + - Deep Hole Found on Mars

mrcgran writes: "Space.com is reporting a very deep hole found on Mars: '...The geological oddity measures some 330 feet (100 meters) across and is located on an otherwise bright dusty lava plain to the northeast of Arsia Mons, one of the four giant Tharsis volcanoes on the red planet. ... The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) used its High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) instrument to draw a bead on the apparent deep hole — a feature that may cause more scientists to ponder about potential subsurface biology on Mars. Because the spot lacks a raised rim or tossed out material called ejecta, researchers have ruled out the pit being an impact crater. No walls or other details can be seen inside the hole, and so any possible walls might be perfectly vertical and extremely dark or — more likely — overhanging.' The original image and its cutout at full resolution can be found in the HiRISE site."

Submission + - Wii to Get New Hardware: Possibly Hard Drive

HoboBob writes: "It has been suggested that Nintendo will be unveiling some new hardware for the Wii at E-3, and some are speculating that it could be a hard drive. According to the article: 'Confirmation back in April that Neo Geo games will begin being added to Wii's Virtual Console download service adds weight to the speculation, considering Neo Geo games are huge — some clocking in it at up to 330MB. One of those bad boys would put serious strain on the Wii's memory.'"
