Journal Com2Kid's Journal: Oh, so that is why people pay for Suse 8

It kicks ass.

Geez. The thing actualy, well, works. I mean crud like running the volume mixer doesn't crash my computer (heh). KDE is speedy, Konqueror is setup to not freak out, and the fonts look better than they do in Windows. Sweet. Royal butt load of packages, w00t. Now to choose an alarm clock program. . . :)

Hmm, no KBounce though, darnit! KBounce is addictive!

Edit: Well almost perfect, my scroll wheel ain't scrollin. :-P

Double edit: Somebody call me when Linux gets sound drivers that don't crap out on a regular basis, WTF kind of a sound subsystem IS this anyways? Bleck.

Oh, so that is why people pay for Suse

Comments Filter:
  • Only PPC/Linux distro that installs and runs w/o having to give a shit about "bootstrap partitions", OpenFirmware minutae, and whatever. Sound worked, modem worked, etc etc.

Package quality was highly variable, and for a long time FHS compliance was for shit, but they're pretty good.
    • I couldn't get SuSE to install on my TiBook (at the time -- it may be supported now) so I can't directly speak to it. I tried just about everything on it, and came out a huge Yellow Dog fan. They set up all the Mac-specific bells and whistles properly, unlike Debian and Mandrake, and I find it a better Red Hat than Red Hat. The one lingering problem is their updaters, but I've found their apt-get process to work perfectly.

      To each his own!

      • When I checked a month ago, SuSE seemed to stop supporting more current hardward. I couldn't find anything that would run on my 550 TiBook. When I have time, I'll give Yellow Dog a load.
  • I built a friend a Pentium Pro 200mhz to use with it when he asked me for a box to play with it on...
  • open up your /etc/X11/XF86Config file and find your input device and make sure you have the same ZAxisMapping and Protocol as I do.
dont change your Device option, as that part is already working

    My InputDevice section:

    Section "InputDevice"

    Identifier "Mouse1"
    Driver "mouse"
    Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
    Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
    Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"

    EndSection

NOTE: be sure to back up your old config first in case you make a mistake

oh, and about the sound, my sound works grea

      • oh, and about the sound, my sound works great (with my Audigy using emu10k1)

It is not the 'working' part, it is the 'stops working after a few sound using applications crash simultaneously' part that gets me.

Same thing was happening in Mandrake. Bleck, now I know why Microsoft integrates the sound output so close to the OS, I have had my entire Windows box crash before but for Winamp playing through my tunes.

Now that is some quality sound code. :)

Litestep is weird, windowkey-e no longer works. . .

      • sorry to hear that our sound is not working, I blame the card.

did you get the scrolly mouse working?

Yah, YaST2 fixed me up. ^_^

The sound goes in and out, I installed some more packages for XMMS (mainly plugins) and now I don't have any sound at all in anything. . . . :-P

Been Transferred Lately?
