- Samba Issues: Sometimes file shares fail to mount with an error message that is simply a negative number. Once this happens, you will not be able to mount that file share again, even if you restart the samba processes on the file server. At that point, your only recourse is to reboot OS X! I feel your pain on this one, although in most cases I have found that with a little googling you can usually find a simple command-line option to reboot the offending service. But for this particular issue I have no solution yet.

Just kill finder in AppMon or by commandline. When it restarts it reconnects the samba share.

HP's traditional strength was getting away with blatantly anti-market practices on the blow-up printers market. They earned fortunes with their good old-fashioned below-production-cost devices and no competition on cartridges tricks. How they could get away with it so long shows how corrupted the US market regulators have become.

I am using this setup as follows: SipDroid => pbxes.org => multiple voip providers. I have DIDs (landline numbers to receive calls) for GB, DE, BE, HU. For cellular data I have a SIM from the following providers respectively: Vodafone, T-Mobile, Mobistar, T-Mobile. I use the G711 or the speex codec when on Edge, and then the quality is just about tolerable, but when on 3G, which is 95% of the time, i never have issues with dropping calls or sound quality. I am happy to help you with this setup just pm me.

It would be nice to know what fos sw were they using. Is it just desktop stuff like ffox/thunderbird with openoffice or maybe enterprise sw like alfresco as well? Or would that be server sw that they intend to keep.
On another note, I don't get the point about scanner drivers. Do they have a stockpile of scanners from before 2005 that they could not use for lack of linux drivers and now they can use again? Would not they need to retire them by now (probably being usb 1.1)? How difficult would it be to buy the scanners that actually have drivers for linux? Or did they already get the linuxdrivers made? In that case, how will migrating to MS cut costs? Will the coder refund the drivers, if the Ministry does not need them anymore?

Americans Less Healthy, But Outlive Brits 521

An anonymous reader writes with this intriguing snippet: "Older Americans are less healthy than their English counterparts, but they live as long or even longer than their English peers, according to a new study by researchers from the RAND Corporation and the Institute for Fiscal Studies in London. Researchers found that while Americans aged 55 to 64 have higher rates of chronic diseases than their peers in England, they died at about the same rate. And Americans age 65 and older — while still sicker than their English peers — had a lower death rate than similar people in England, according to findings published in the journal Demography."
