Will editor's have to demonstrate they've read the story as well? Little things like copy and pasted characters unsupported by the site suggest they hadn't.

For the record, some of this stuff is not visible in the backend and only becomes obvious once a story is live. Doesn't excuse issues left standing, of course. We are inching closer to end-to-end UTF8 support which will solve much of this, but it'll be a while still as we tackle other issues.

You make it sound as if Slashdot is running on a very simple setup, like a mom-and-pop shop site. That's of course not the case, so before you play armchair quarterback, maybe think this through a little bit? For the record, no hardware broke, no critical systems were overlooked, and planning was extensive and through. Shit still happened, and the crew stuck it out and fixed it, with outside consultant help.

Google Worked With Intel on a custom AI Chip For Its Pixel Phones (cnbc.com) 73

A special-purpose chip for artificial intelligence and other tasks in Google's new Pixel smartphones draws on Intel technology. From a report: In addition to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL both feature a new custom Pixel Visual Core co-processor, which is meant to improve speed and battery life when shooting photos with Google's HDR+ technology, and better handle AI workloads in apps, Google has said. But the company didn't disclose details about its partners on the chip. Then, last week, device repair website iFixit published a teardown of the Pixel 2 XL that showed what the Pixel Visual Core chip actually looks like. The serial number on the chip in a photograph begins with "SR3," like some Intel chips. Google confirmed the connection. "Google built Pixel Visual Core with Intel," the Google spokesperson wrote in an email to CNBC. "Pixel Visual Core is a custom designed processor from Google, built to serve specific computational photography requirements that could not be met by existing chips."

I currently use the acme.sh client on linux and it's been solid and easy to use. I don't have anything positive or negative to say about the multitude of other options. And again... things have likely moved along a lot since i switched a year ago.

At Slashdot we use the acme tool as well, rolling it out now across our infrastructure. Dependable, quick and easy.

(Very late to the party) I thought so too. How hard can it be to enable UTF8 end to end? Turns out Perl is its own can of worms. So we will be upgrading app servers, then work on the code base, and finally make sure database tables are all correct and web server configured to spit out the correct things. It'll take us a bit of time, but we are doing it. From whipslash on down everyone is committed.
